LANDING FISH AT ISLAND BAY
COMMISSION OF INQUIRY APPOINTED At the last meeting of the City Council it was decided to appoint a commission to inquire into the best means of overcoming the difficulty of landing fish at Island Bay, and the most suitable site for the erection of a wharf and facilities for cleaning the fish and destroying any refuse. Yesterday, the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) stated that the Minister of Marine (the Hon. J. G. Cobbe) had consented to Mr. F. W. Furkert, en-gineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department, and Mr. G. C. Godfrey, Under-Secretary of Marine, acting as a commission to conduct the inquiry. No active steps, however, will be taken in this direction until the holiday period is over. The fishermen suggested a site on the eastern side of the bay, but following the vigorous protests of residents and the Ratepayers’ Association, the Council decided against the site. This only leaves the western side of the bay and the island as alternatives, and the latter involves communication' with the island, a scheme which in itself would involve heavy expenditure. . A further suggestion was that the industry should be transferred further up the coast in the direction of Diana or Kapiti Island, where are the main fishing grounds.
