NEW YEAR RACES

TRACKS GENERALLY ON THE HEAVY SIDE k** — — GREAT NORTHERN DERBY WON BY RED HECKLE I ' \ OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES BY PEGAWAY AND AUSSIE Race meetings were conducted at many centres yesterday, and although the overhead conditions were reasonably good in the majority of cases, the tracks were heavy. The most important fixture, of cpurse, was the third day of the Auckland meeting, at which the Qreat Northern Derby was decided. This event was won by the Southerner, Red Heckle, with Prodice in second place. At the same meeting Pegaway registered a notable performance by leading the field home in the Racing Club Handicap, thus securing his third win at the meeting; another first-class performance goes to the credit of Aussie, who won the sprint event. Other important meetings were those of the Wairarapa Racing Club, Marton Jockey Club, Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, and the Stratford Racing Club.

WAIRARAPA MEETING > PANTHER WINS CUP FROM TERI KAIWAIWAI HANDICAP TO BANKET ' Dominion Special Service. '"The weather for the first day of the Wairarapa Racing Club’s summer. meeting ■was tine, but cloudy. There was a large attendance, and the racing was very good throughout, though scratchings reduced the number of runners to live in two events. Speculation on the machine was animated, .the sum of £24,096 being handled, as against £20,519 10/- last year. There was an unfortunate occurrence in connection with the first race. • Anticipating that the race would require to be jus in divisions, the elub included in the /card a list-of horses in each division and then published - oh’ separate pages a list, of the whole of the horses engaged. In numbering .tlie, horses in the first division they awarded the bracketed horses separate numbers instead of putting in la or 2a, with the result that Arikinui’s number in the first division was 5, whereas his number in the non-division list was 3, and it was the latter list that was used, tlie race being run in one heat. Many people who intended to support Arikinui called for a ticket on No. 5, and much to i their chagrin found after the race had f liven run that they were on the wrong horse—Bicker. TAUHERENIKAU STAKES. ” The field in the stakes got away to a good start, Spearin’ being the only one that dwelt on the mark. Arikinui immediately took up the running with Baskier as his nearest opppnent. Racing round the bend Kentish Lady improved Ler position. Arikinui and Baskier were' still in front as .heads were turned for home, and the former was never under pressure to win by about a couple of lengths from Atholspear, who passed Bps.kier about 50 yards from the post. KiriZana was fourth, but there was not mucli 1 between him and several of the others, of ■whom Sir Spcar .was.finishing on strongly. > FEATHERSTON. HANDICAP.' "• i* Tlie field got away in line in the Featherston Handicap, Volplane being the first to show’ out, but Agreeable ran past him, after about 50 yards had been covered. Positions changed quickly on the bend, Volplane again racing to the front from Agreeable and Borsalene. When straightened up for home , the colours of-Roto-whero. Volplane, and Borsalene were most prominent in front of a somewhat bunchled field. A furlong from home Rotowhero and Billion were in charge, the former finishing strongest and winning nicely. Borsalene bore out a bit under pressure in the last part, but was able to hold off Freezeout. Volplane and Ripdale were the next to.finjsh.. . NURSERY HANDICAP. A good dispatch was effected in the Nursery Handicap. Courtlike struck tiie froat almost Immediately, Acreline and Hot Springs being his nearest opponents. Racing freely, Courtlike led round the bend from Acreline and Hot Springs, with the others in close attendance. At r the straight entrance Courtlike had a lead of a couple of lengths, but at this stage i Acreline lost her position. In the run .home Courtlike was never menaced, winning nicely by about two lengths from Tobaccoland, who was Inclined to hang out when the pressure was applied. Hot Springs was a fair third. The next to finish were-, Emotion and Ex Douo. - The winner’s name, was omitted from the card, but a notice that he. was a runner was posted on the totalisator board. However, some of those present did not observe the notice. WAIRARAPA CUI*. Tert, was first out after the start for the Cup, and passing the stand led from Panther, Stanchion, Seatown, King Midas, rft’wink, David Garrick, Hynanna and Row■ley, who stumbled, but recovered himself. At the seven-furlong post Teri was still Jin charge from Panther, Seatown, and King 3l|idas. There’ was little change ever the nexlt couple of furlongs, the only one to materially Improve his position being Thurnbfll, who was lying fourth at this stage. ; Racing round the bend into the straight, Seatown appeared to try for an opening on the rails, but could not get -” through. Panther was almost abreast of Tert as they turned into the straight, but it was not until the last’fifty yards that Panther managed to get his head in front. He won eventually by half a length from Teri, with Sea town another half a length away third.. King Midas was three lengths away, fourth, Thurnbcll being alongside him. Hynanna and Rowley were the last • >to finish. ,1 ’ KAIWAIWAI HANDICAP. ■ Nightmarch, Callaumore, Helotis, and i Silver Coot declined their engagement in the xalwalwal Handicap, thus leaving only iive runners. The public made Banket lavourite, and he duly carried them I throigh. When the tapes were released, Koya. Duke dwelt on tlie mark, losing a Jot if ground. Miss Ransom was hrst out, but Banket shot past her before reaching the five-furloug post, and led for the iemainder of tlie journey. On' the bend Raineses, Lady Ideal, and Miss Ransom were running abreast, with Royal Duke making up liis leeway. In the run lome Royal Duke wore down botn » Ramcses and Lady Ideal, but failed to reach Banket by the best part of a length, i with Barneses right up third, and Lady kldeal a close fourth. Miss Ransom was *not jersevered with when her rider saw lie bid no chance. Royal Duke was the unluiky horse. VAIRARAPA HACK HANDICAP. Th< field was in nice even line when tlie barrbr wan released for the Hack Ilandi- » cup, but Courageous was slow in finding X bls 'eel. Cloyne began smartest and led ' dowr the back stretch from Rory Mor and Mouloa Wonder. At tlie iive-furlong post Bissie had run into third position, while, tlie ethers were reducing the gap between them and the leader. On the bend Rotowlteio moved up smartly on the outside. '.lt tie straiglit entrance Rory .Mor. Moilt,a Wonder, and Rotowhero appeared to 1 .■> the leaders of a bunched field. In a • ..,d race down the straiglit Rory Mor I ina on long enough to defeat Rotowhero t- ? half a length, with St. Melba about a r -k nwav third. linarosebud was placed I -irth. but Mouton Wonder was almost in j «t. with herf Tlie latter looked a di.s--i -ict possibility- at tlie distance, but then weakened. WARDELL HANDICAP. From an excellent start in the Wardell Handicap, Deluge assumed command from • Inferno. Royal Game, Maui, and Decoy /Bird Tliiii order was maintained to the f four-furlong post, where .lie field was ‘ running in closi* formation. Royal Game and Decoy Bird having run up on the outside. At the straiglit entrance Deluge was slightly in front of Royal Game, with the . ethers well up. Over the next furlong < thi-v raced in a bunch, but then condition . told, and Maui drew out to win by three from Decoy Bird, who was a head ’ jin front of Royal Game. Deluge was fourth . and Inferno last.

WHAREKAKA HANDICAP. Miss Gowrie commenced very smartly in the Wharekaka Handicap, and was tlie early leader from Red Glow, Raukura. Second Thought, and Quantum. On the bend the field closed on Miss Gowrie, and as they entered the straight the colours of Second Thought showed up first, with Quantum putting in his run in the middle of the course Second Thought hung on gamely to win a good race by halt a length from Quantum, with Greymist a length away third. Raukura anil Waterspear. were the next to finish, with the latter going the strongest! ’When the serious part of the job had to be undertaken Atiss Gowrie stopped as quickly as she had /Begun. The third day of the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting was held at Ellerslie to-day in fine warm weather. A sharp shower fell after the fifth race, the Great Northern Derby, but apart from making the track a trifle greasy its effect was negligible. The track except for the straight was not in good order. It was much cut about by the first two days’ racing in the rain, and no attention was paid to it down the back and on tlie turns. The totalisator receipts for the first three days are £238,815 10s., compared with £315,805 for the first three days of last year, a decrease of £76,956, and to-day’s receipts were £98,757, a decrease of £13,207 over the third day of last year. The racing was interesting. Pegaway carried off all tlie honours in the A.R.C. Handicap and Aussie was too brilliant for hts opponents in the sprint. The race for the Derby proved a good thing in the finish for the Riccarton representative Red Heckle. Not only did he have too much pace for his opponents, but he outstayed them in the critical stages. ELLERSLIE HANDICAP. Amor started a very firm favourite for the apprentice riders' race, but after a creditable showing had to be content with third money. Court Jester was the first out and he led for a furlong, when Modest Boy, Miss Myrtle and Arikitoa went to the front and they led to the straight from Court Jester, High Faintin' and Amor. Once in line Modest Boy and Miss Myrtle did best, and Modest Boy won by a short neck. Amor was a length and a half back, with Philippic, Court Jester and High Faintin’ handy. The second horse was the rank outsider. Outside the placed horses the best race was run by Philippic. He finished on well after being in the rear for the major portion of the journey. Court Jester had every chance. MIDSUMMER HANDICAP. Gay Ballerina, drawing No. 1, and with Goldfinch up, was sorted out as a certainty for the two-year-old handicap, and she duly won, but had little to spare at the finish from an outsider in Polyxena, who was finishing much the stronger, Glenartney, with 9Jlb. over-weight to secure the services of B. H. Morris, was fractious at the start and to a lesser extent Awamutu. When let go Daistou was first to move, bnt lost his place, Glenartney and Gold Tinge with Gay Ballerina, Currajong, Dalton and Praetor jiext. Gay Ballerina moved up to the front found the turn and led into the straight from Gold Tinge, Currajong and Daistou, Glenartney having run right off tlie course. Once in line Gay Ballerina shot away and Polyxena came with a strong run. Shaken up. Gay Ballerina got home by a long neck. Gold Tinge was four or five lengths back, followed by Currajong, -Dalston, Desert Song and Gay Duke. The winner is very smart. It was her first start in New Zealand, but in the spring she ran third in the A..1.C. Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick. Polyxena is a neat filly by Chief Ruler from tile imported Podokcs. She was one of Jamieson's team on tlie Sydney trip, but did not race there. She finished very solidly. Gold Tinge lias improved a bit but had every chance. Dalston was beaten a long way' from home and Desert Song, while running a fair race, was never likely. Glenartney. by Hunting Song from Melodise (dam of Agitato and Vivo), from tlie Fordell stable, allowed a lot of brilliance early, hut lost nny chance lie had by running right off tlie course coming into the straight. NEW YEAR HURDLES. Gienotus, a big outsider, came home In the hurdles, outstaying another lightweight in Lady Spalpeen, who had a very comniandiug lead for most of tlie journey King's Guard and Farndon fell at the first fence anil Mangani at the second, leaving Lady Spalpeen with a long lead from Potoanul, Abbot’s Delight. Lady Cintra and Beaumont. Down the back tlie last time Pouri and Abbot’s Delight fell and Beaumont made a couple of bad jumps wliieli put him out of tlie possibilities Turning for home Lady Spill peen was still well clear of Potoanui and Lady Cintra, lint they were tiring, and once over the last fence Gienotus stuck on to cateli and beat Lady Spalpeen by a long neck. Potoanui was a couple of lengths back, followed by Lady Cintra. Mangaiti and Beaumont. Gienotus won through superior stamina. _ Beaumont ran below previous form.

A.R.C. HANDICAP. Hoylake, the favourite for the principal handicap, was well back all the way, and never threatened to get up. white l-ang (C. Eastwood) created a sensation by careering away to the front just as the same rider had done with Hoylake in tlie New Zealand Cup, and at tlie end of live or six furlongs was ten to twelve lengths clear of the bunch, which was headed by Coriuax, Papatu, Catkin, Pegaway. and Count Cavour, the rear being brought up by Oratrix, Hoylake, and Tidal. ertigern ran up past the half, where White hangs lead was reduced to a couple of I tn- 11 * 5 - and as they turned into tlie straight W bite Fang, Corinas, and Verligern were close together from Catkin. Transformer. I ai lll ' tu and Pegaway. Pegaway came through with a solid run over the last furlong, and beat Transformer by three-parts of a length; White. Fang was a head away third, and close up were i’apatu. Connax. Catkin, Thursby, Mask, Hoylake, ami VorticfGm. . . The winner won like the good horse which he undoubtedly is. IransforiiKr surprised by his forward showing, whi e White Fans, better handled, looked as it he would have been hard to beat. Corinax beat himself by trying to get up to the leader too soon. Oratrix finished very solidly from the rear, but bad no chance of winning. Papatu an d v t Up" kin ran fair races. \ertigcin ran well, and at ten would just about have won. J le ° run on as the wet weather interrupted his work. Count Cavour, in a handy position for a mile or a little over, eventually finished a very bad last. GREAT NORTHERN DERBY. Fourteen started for the rich stake in the three-year-old classic, but in the main tlie form represented was very - moderate. The dual Guineas winner Prodice was a firm favourite from Toxeuma and Red Heckle, and then the best support amongst the others went to Teheka and Perception. Toxeuma, Sir Russell, Prodice and Moorgas were the early leaders, and as they ran out of the straight Perception went up and took charge from Sir Russell, Prodice, Toxeuma, and Moorgas, Red Heckle and Metellus bringing up the rear. Red Heckle moved up past the five furlong post, past which there was some crowding in tiie rear, Teheka and Concentrate getting badly stopped. Red Heckle went on until passing the half, where he was within striking distance of the leading bunch in which Perception, Moorgas, Toxeuma, Prodiee and Gold Money were the most prominent. Continuing his run Red Heckle was up and challenging a furlong and a half from the post, and although he got into some crowding he extricated himself and forged ahead to beat Prodice fairly comfortably by three-quarters of a length. .Toxeumu was two lengths back third, with Gold Money a handy fourth. The bunch was two or three lengths away, headed by Concentrate, Perception, and Teheka. Red Heckle won on his merits and outstayed all his opponents, coming from last position over the last six furlongs. On the other hand, Prodice, never further back than third, had every chance. Toxeuma failed to stay. Really on the season's form Red Heckle and Prodice were outstanding, tlie only doubt in the case of the former, who won tlie Members’ Handicap in November, being his stamina. He is the best horse so far sired by the Martian horse Warplane, and his win made the second successive victory for F. Christmas’s stable, wtio won twelve months ago with Martarma, on whom R. McTavish was also tlie joeke> Concentrate and Teheka had their chanv s badly affected about five furlongs from home, but for which it is possible they would have been in the picture. Moorgas covered a considerable lot of ground, and as he was with Red Heckle a furlong off the post, he might have been troublesome handled in a capable manner. COUNTY HANDICAP. For the hack race the solid favourite Jolly Money proved the best of good things, shooting out in the straight and winning very easily by three or four lengths. In the early part Air King. Bombardcr, Brilliant Light, and Just Nell were the most prominent, and over the business stages Air King did best to get second money from Jfussie by a length. Mussie came from a good way back, and so did the fourth horse, Good Boy. Royal Flower, who ran a fair race, was fifth, and then came Brilliant Light and Bombarder. Just' Nell, a four-year-old Nassau mare, shaped well for six furlongs, and looks an improved horse. NEWMARKET HANDICAP. Aussie was relied upon in the open sprint in preference to Awarere, and lie was a, much better favourite than Paganelli. Naturally they monopolised the bulk of the attention of backers, but it was surprising the amount ot support accorded the other runners, whose chances after tills brilliant pair looked hopeless. , The Hawk from No. 1 began best and settled down in front with Tea Time until past tlie half, where Kingfield ran up aud led for home from Tea Time. The Hawk, High Finance, Aussie and Paganelli. Once in line Aussie shot away, and although Paganelli made desperate efforts Aussie won comfortably by two lengths, Paganelli beating High Finance by a similar margin. Kingfield and The Hawk were next. It was a two-horse race and a onehorsc finish. The Hawk ran quite a fair raCC ’ GLASGOW HANDICAP. There was a long delay at the start of the concluding race caused by Golden Wedding and Yaqui. They were flnally left, and in addition Golden Wedding so badly interfered with Liaison that the latter also was completely left. Lady s Bov soon showed out from Ohinemurl, Flying Juliet, Marble King and Cynthia N with Ciinabue and Lunette next. At the five furlongs interference was met by Cimabue and Lunette, who had their chances extinguished. Mervette moveil up past the half and Lady s Boy led icr home with Ohinemuri, Marble King. Mervette, Prince Lu and Branson. Once in line Mervette joined the leaders and in a close finish gpt home by a head from Ohinemuri, with L» d . v ’ s further back. Master O Rourke was two or three lengths back fourth, followed by Cynthia N.. Prince Lu, Cimabue, Flvincr Juliet and Brunson. Mervette won well. Cimabue did not begin very well and apart from the ference was never galloping freely. son. who has not had a race tor a showed up entering the strmght and should be improved. The winner is trained by A. Tinker, who had a good day, as he also rode the winning double Pegaway and Aussie. DETAILS OF THE RACING By Telegraph.—Press Association.
