RETURNS FOR LAST YEAR A marked increase in deaths as compared with 1927 is shown by the Wellington figures for the year ended on Monday. There are increases also in the number of births and marriages. Details are as follow, the figures for 1927 being given in parentheses:— Births 2234 (2210), deaths 1262 (1091), marriages 1476 (1415), marriages before Registrar 373 (357). Most deaths were recorded in August, the increase over the corresponding month of the previous year being 30. Figures for December of 1928 are as follow, those for the corresponding month last year being given in parenBirtiis 172 (177), deaths 89 (89), marriages 185 (151), marriages before Registrar 373 (357). DECREASES IN DUNEDIN By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, January 1. Features of the annual returns of the registrar for Dunedin and district are decreases in the number of births, deaths, and marriages recorded as compared with those registered during 1927.. The fallowing are the t figures, those for 1927 being in parenthesesBirths, (1613), 1513; deaths, (993), 921; marriages, (770), 703. Fewer marriages were solemnised in the registrar’s office this year than last year, the figures for 1928 being 107, as against 131 for last year. During the month ended yesterday the number births registered was 153, deaths 73, and marriages 103. For December of last year the figures were : Births, 122; deaths, 86; marriages, 103. CHRISTCHURCH FIGURES By Telegraph.— Press Association. Christchurch, January 1. Births in Christchurch during 1928 totalled 2504, deaths 1295, and marriages 1126. The December figures for 1928 and 1927 respectively were as follow :—Births, 195, 196; deaths, 104, 123; marriages, 740,132.
