MOTOR SHIPS
LAST YEAR’S PRODUCTION BRITISH IN THE LEAD (Australian .Press Assn.—United Service) ■ (Rec. January 1, 5.5 p.m.) London, December 31. The world’s output of motor-ships in 1928 was a record, 189 vessels of 1,177,235 gross tonnage compared with 137, of 816,000 tons. In. 1927. The British production, 73 ships, totalling 470,405 tons, exceeds the next three countries combined, and is uearly double the 1927 tonnage. At present 270 ships, of 1,763,000 tons, are building. This number shows a slight reduction on last year, but it is entirely due to a- reduction of tankers, as passenger cargo liners show increases. There are new six millions tonnage of motor-ships afloat, compared with under a million, in 1922.
