DISTRESS IN BRITISH MINING AREAS
PARLIAMENTARY GRANTS FOR RELIEF (British oitiei.u wireless.! Rugby, December 19. The Prince of Wales has Issued a direct and personal appeal on behalf of the women aud children in the distressed coal areas, and has become patron of the Lord Mayor's fund, which now amounts to over £192,000. The Supplementary Estimate, which vill be presented to the House of Commons to-day, in order to carry out the plan for helping to relieve distress in the mining areas, amounts in all . i £295,625, which is made up as follows: — Grant in aid of the Lo d Mayor's fund £150,000, transference of unemployed working people £lOO,OOO. relief in distressed mining areas in Scotland £20.625, unemployment relief works in Royal parks and pleasure gardens £20.000. RESPONSE TO PRINCE OF WALES’S APPEAL Australian Press Association. (Rec. December 20, 9.25 p.m.) London, December 20. The Government’s offer to double the Lord Mayor’s fund for the distressed in the mining areas, coupled with the Prince of Wales’s appeal, resulted iu yesterday’s contributions totalling £50,000. The present total is £200,000. The Prince of Wales will broadcast an appeal on Christmas Day throughout England.
