ROWING

AROUND THE CLUBS The intcr-club eights will be rowed on March 9 next year. The Mothes Shigjd Regatta has been fixed for February 2, 1929. The programme will be the same as last year. 'There will be twelve races, consisting or senior fours, senior pairs, senior double sculls, junior four, maiden four, maiden pair, maiden double scull, lOst. under four, lOst. welter junior four, maiden single scull, and youths’ four. The matter of a coach and selector for the inter-provincial eights will be held over until early in January . Wellington Club. With better weather conditions this season the Wellington Club has been able to push ahead with its programme of races. So far two events, the Bert Shaw Memorial aud Club Fours, have been run off, and these were well supported by members. The early selection of regatta crews has been responsible for the temporary curtailment of races, but it is expected to push ahead with them early in the New Year. The following are the club's nominations for the Picton Regatta on New Yeat’s Day:—Maiden fours: C. G. Van Slyke (str.), L. Jones, 11. Bright, and T. A. Adams (bow); youths’ fours: T. H. Millar str.), J. Beasley, H. J. Luke, H. E. McKinlay (bow) ; lightweight maiden fours: G. Costello (str.), R. Sutherland, T. Herd, N. Holland )bow) ; maiden pairs: G. G. Van Slyke (str.), L. Jones (bow); maiden double sculls: C. G. Van Slyke (sr.), T. H. Millar (bow); single sculls : G. S. Bright. Jones and Bright, in the maiden fours, are two new members this season, the former having rowed in the Wanganui Union youths’ crew last season, with some success, while Bright, as a member of the Blenheim club’s light-weight maiden crew last year, shows distinct promise as an oarsman. Van Slyke and Adams make up in oarsmanship what they lack in weight, so that altogether this crew should bring success to the club. Herd, last year’s stroke of the lightweight maidens, has given way to Costello, who shows much promise. Provided they keep together for training, this crew will, no doubt, do well. The youth’s crew, while lacking experience, makes up for that in their keenness, and should be in good form by New Year’s Day. Messrs. J. R. Crawford, club captain, and H. McKinlay. the club’s coaches, are doing good work among the crews. The following are extracts from the club’s half-yearly report:—“So far this season, two events have been conducted, namely the Bert Shaw Memorial, and the club fours. The entries in both events must be considered highly satisfactory, while the indications are a marked revival of interest in club races. It is pleas-

iug to note the form and interest shown by new members generally. Unfortunately, however, due to the early selection of regatta crews, the racing programme has beeu temporarily curtailed, and the absence of old members from general practice has certainly limited the scope of the schooling of new members. With a little better weather conditions, and the continued interest of all members, it is hoped that further successful races will be held during the early part of the New Year. “Some 45 new members, of which 30 odd are juniors, have been elected so far this season, which is very satisfactory. They are with few exceptions, very enthusiastic, and it behoves the older members to assist them with advice on the art of rowing, so that they will continue to uphold the worthy’ traditions of the club. Recently, It was found necessary to close the membership roll, as the accommodation was being taxed to its full capacity. The committee hopes, however, that this will only be a temporary measure. “The club’s boats have now all been put in order by the caretaker, while three sets of practice oars, and four sets of practice sculls have been purchased from Geo. Towns. Sydney, by direction of the committee. The members of the “workingbee” appointed at the annual meeting, carried out their duties satisfactorily, with the result that the skids were placed in a sound position, and were able to withstand the heavy seas some months ago.” Petone Notes.

Star Boating Club. Advantage has been taken of the long spell of light southerly weather to further the training of the Star regatta crews, most of which have concentrated on long-distance work-outs. Most of the men show keenness for the work, but there is still much to he done, and less than a fortnight in which to do it. In the boats there has been much improvement. Crews should remember to supplement the boat work with judicious land training. A good half-mile sprint after every practice row, with longer runs at intervals, will work wonders in developing the wind, without which no crew can hope to last the distance under regatta-

racing conditions. Attention should also be devoted to the abdominal organs, and those exercises which tend to strengthen them are well worth while.
