A STITCH IN TIME
LOOK OVER YOUR CAR. With Christmas only a few days off, many motorists are putting the final touches on their cars prior to setting out on their trips. The wise ones have had their cars thoroughly overhauled. This is a prudent procedure, for although one cannot travel far without passing a garage or service station of some description, there is always the risk that things will go wrong at a spot which is miles from anything and anywhere. Tires should be looked over, and all parts of the engine seen to be functioning properly. The batteries should be filled up and tested, If necessary they should be recharged. Any rattles or squeaks should be attended to immediately and all loose parts tightened. Drivers should also see that their electric bulbs are not wearing out Another tiling to guard against Is a leaking radiator. This is a frequent occurrence, and although easily remedied, is a nuisance when touring. Nothing is more annoying on a long trip than to have to stop every few miles and fill up the radiator. Last, but not least, see that the petrol tank is not allowed to become empty. This advice regarding the petrol tank may sound unnecessary, but the number of motorists who start off with only a little petrol in their tank is remarkable. Incidentally, one may rest assured that If the tank is going to run dry, it won’t do so until you are well away from any pump. Also, the number of people who carry spare tins of petrol about with them is extremely small, and it is ignoininous to have to be towed. All motorists should carry a small tin. say a two-gallon one, of petrol with them.
