THEFTS OF MILK

BAD BOTH FOR COUNCIL AND CUSTOMERS

Hardly a day goes by without the milk department of the Wellington City Corporation receiving complaints from householders.that their morning’s milk has been stolen from their residences, after being left by the department’s roundsmen. Much annoyance is being caused, not only to the department, but to the customers concerned. cases of this petty thieving being reported from all parts of the city and suburbs. So serious Ims it become that watches are being kept throughout the area served by the department, in an effort to put down the practice. Sunday seems a popular day for the activities of these pilferers, the day, no doubt, being chosen because it is one on which a great many people leave out cash for their week-end supply of cream.

During the past month, the stealers of milk, and- also tokens, are reported to have been particularly active in the vicinity of MacDonald Crescent, but a wajfch during that period, has, so far, failed to detect the culprits. In many cases, tokens are taken before the arrival of the roundsman, this causing a great deal of inconvenience, because it means that the customer gets no milk. It is stated these thefts, apart from causing annoyance and dissatisfaction among customers, act detrimentally upon, the trade of the department. Many people have stopjied. taking municipal milk, on account of the inconvenience they have been caused, through petty thieving. It is stated that the department, has lost about eight gallons of trade in one street alone through this cause.
