Dominion Special Service. Shannon, December 17. A gathering of considerable interest was held at the residence of 51rs. E. Nicol, Plimmer Terrace, Shannon, yesterday, when several local residents met at a dinner to celebrate the jubilee (50 years) of their landing in New Zealand. Leaving Plymouth in the sailing vessel Hermione on September 5, 1878, they reached Wellington on December 16, the passengers spending Christmas on Somes Island. Among the guests were slrs. E. Nicol, 51rs. T. Hensman, Mr. E. Gingall, of Shannon; Mrs. H. Cox, of Bunnythorpe; and slr. T. Gingell. of Marotiri. At 2.15 yesterday morning the Fire Brigade was called out to an outbreak in the residence of slr. Coakley, Grey Street. On arrival it was found that the fire had not got a good hold., and was easily quenched by a bucket brigade. At the time of the fire slr. Coakley was absent. Mrs. Coakley and the youngest son being at home. Only slight damage by fire was done. The brigade was called out again yesterday night, when it was found that the house was again burning. slr. J. Osborne left for Maihi on Saturdav. having received a telegram that his father was seriously ill. 5Jr G. G. Mitchell, who has been on a

holiday to Sydney, returned home on Friday. slr. and slrs. McLachlan, Woodville, and slr. and Sirs. B. Gordon, Slarton, visited friends in Shannon during the week-end. The public meeting called by the Mayor (Mr. E. Butt) on Friday night to set up a committee to. deal with arrangements in connection with the coming of a doctor to Shannon was well attended. Slessrs. Moody. F. Taylor, Hyde. Hudson, Cronquest.' Gray, and Lister were appointed. The demonstration of Christmas cake fancing icing given by Miss Sladdever, of fhe Pahiatua Women’s Institute, at the local institute, was watched by a large number of members. Besides icing, the demonstration cake to be used for the local school funds, hliss Mnddever helped several members to decorate their own cakes. The afternoon nnd evening meetings will long be remembered by the Shannon Institute. During her stay sfiss sladdovor wns the guest of slrs. Pallant. .Tuvian Street. slrs. D. McLaggan, who has been an inmate of fhe Palmerston North Hospital for some time, returned home on Saturday.
