NEW DANGER SIGNALS

‘LIGHTHOUSES” FOR HUTT COUNTY

Subject to the consent of the Minister of Public Works, permission has been given by the Hutt County Council for a Napier firm to erect “lighthouses” at dangerous points on the roads under its jurisdiction. These towers are to be built according to the specifications contained in recently gazetted regulations, and will be illuminated either by acetylene lamps or reflectors. On top of each will be a large disc with the signal required upon it, and with a source of light at its centre. These erections may be used alone at dangerous bends, or as warnings of schools, bridges, etc., also in conjunction with the ordinary signs at railway crossings.

Revenue will be obtained by the company from advertising displayed upon the sides of the “lighthouses.” An agreement with the county council has been entered into whereby at least three towers must be put up every year over a period of five years. It is stated that the scheme is being successfully operated in Hawke’s Bay and is expected to prove equally satisfactory in the ridings of the Hutt County.
