CHRIST’S BEAT WANGANUI

Wanganui, December 19. The annual boat race between Wanganui Collegiate School and Christ’s College Christchurch, was held on the "Wanganui River this morning over a mile course and was won by the visiting crew by a length and a quarter. The weather was perfect and the rowing conditions ideal. Christ’s College took up No. 1 position nearest the bank and the local crew No. 2 position. From an even start the visitors were not long in gaining the lead. Both crews were hugging the Wanganui east bank and were swinging well together. Shooting the Aramoho Bridge, Taylor, stroke of the Wanganui crew, called for a dozen and they got within half a length of their rivals. Urged on by the cries of “Schooll School 1” the local crew made desperate efforts to push their boat in front, but Christ’s were rowing well within themselves and responded dozen for dozen. Fifty yards past the Aramoho Bridge “School” throw out a final challenge. but could not stall off Christ’s finishing burst, which carried them past the winnihg post hy one length and a quarter to the good. The raee was followed by a large number of spectators, and both crews received an ovation for their spirited contest. The competing crews were as follow: — Christ’s College: D. G. McHardy (str.). A.
