THE RACING WORLD

NOTES AND COMMENTS

Nominations for all events at the Foxton Having Club's annual race meeting wdl close with the secretary. Mr. J. Mar *; iu ' Box 1, Foxton, to-night at 8 o'clock. Lhe principal events are the Foxton Cup, of ■lOO sovs. (including cup value 100 sovs.). the Anniversary Handicap. 17 ® 80VS "’ °h 1 , c Herrington Handicap. l<o s >' B -’ “ t flrst day; and the President s Hanaicnp. 250 sovs., Wharang Hand cap. sovs.. and Carnarvon Hack Han , d '“ p ’ th „ sec oud (ineluding eup of 20 sovs.), on the second day.

Acceptances for the first day Wairarapa Racing Club’s 8 “wriday on January 1 and 2 will close on 1, rldaj at 8 pan. The telegraph office at Bearn erston closes at 5 pan.

After the recent rains, the tracks at Trentham yesterday some order for galloping on the S™ b8 ’, 8 " d o f° ta | interesting work took place in view or me holiday racing.

Oratrix and Concentrate, the reverse wav, ran a mile in Imin. 43sec, the first half in 53sec.. and the last half in oUB '- e - They did not carry big weights, but they both performed their task.. , re “ a f, a . n .f well and nulled up in splendid condition. Oratrix has improved a lot since she won the New Zealand Cup, and promises to run a great race in the Auckland „£“ p ’ r which she will be ridden by “• ®?®9?." centrate has also come on a lot since Ric carton, and it will be no surprise to track watchers at Trentham if he P ro ? eB . °' lB ‘?, £ 1 the hardest to beat in the Great Northern Derby.

Cimabue. picked up by Deluge, who stuck to him over the last three, sprinted half a mile well in 49sec. Cimabue s form this season has not been very reliable, but he is in good order, and if He runs up to what he is capable of at Auckland, lie will be hard to beat. He is to take his place in the Railway Handicap field, and will be ridden by R. Reed. “ 18 favour that he has run some of his best races on the Auckland track.

Inferno, who is improving, ran four furlongs in 50 l-osce., under a big weight.

First Money and Duellona ran five furlongs, the last half in 52sec.

Kentish Lady and Courtlike were responsible for a smart sprint over half a mile in 49Jsec.

Tcheka, working the usual way .J® u , lld ; and picked up by Kotowhero over the last six, ran a mile. They finished together and ran the last seven in Imin. Msec. Tcheka carired a light weight.

Roi de Vai sprinted four furlongs in 50 sec.

Historic, who was eased up round the turn, ran a mile in Imin, 49scc. He was ridden by A. Fratus, who will have the mount in the Manavvatu Cup.

Oratrix, Concentrate, Cimabue, Catkin, Tcheka and Tea Queen will leave Trentham this morning to join the special horse train to Ellerslie. Tea Queen is the two-year-old filly by Tea Tray from Graceful and has yet to start. She is engaged the first day In the Nursery Handicap. '

The Riccarton contingent for Auckland is due from the South by the Wahine this morning.

Since 1888 an aged horse has only once won the Auckland Cup and that was a champion—Bobrikoff. Aged horses in this year’s field are Count Cavour, Transformer, Desert Glow, and Eh Tlmi.

Royal Blood and Awarere jointly hold the time record for the A.R.C. Railway Handicap—lmin. 12 3-sscc. Royal Blood carried 7.1 and Awarere 7.0.

Some of the Aucklanders appear to hold the opinion that Aussie is next door to a certainty in the Railway Handicap, and they are pointing out his brilliant victory at Waipa on .Saturday last under 10. C to emphasise their claim. Aussie with 9.9 in the Railway certainly appears to hold safe all he beat on Saturday last, but the Railway Handicap field is one which takes some beating. He will have to carry his 9.9 all the way without a let-up and it is worth remembering that this has beaten the best of them in the past. The highest weight of a winner of the Railway is 9.8. carried by The Workman in 1894. And even then ho had to divide the honours with The Dancer, 8.8. Hohoro carried 0.0, when he won in 1003; Silver Link 9.0 in 1921, and Reremoana 9.7 in 1925, when he had only half the field to beat, the race being run in divisions. Aussie thus has to create a record weight-earrying performance to win the big sprint on Boxing Day. First class sprints are very hard to win under such a weight as he has got. There is too much brilliance amongst the lighter weights, who make every ounce tell.

Last week F. Tilley was a bit uncertain about Laughing Prince fulfilling his engagement in the Auckland Cup. The Quantock colt has never shown a real liking for a long journey, but his form this season suggests that he now has a better chance of getting a distance than ever he had, and it has been decided that he will be a runner in the big handicap on Boxing Day.

Admiral Drake is training on nicely at Hastings, and it has been settled that the Chief Ruler—Tame Duck colt will take his place in the Palmerston North Stakes on Boxing Day.

A cold, blustery wind made matters unpleasant on the Hawera course on Saturday morning (says the ‘Star”). The outside of the course proper was open for fast work, and was in first-class order. J. Brown was first out, with Silvermine and Llanore, tlie pair going from the proper slx-furlong post. Llanore jumped off smartly and led for a couple of furlongs, Silvermine from then on having an advantage to the winning post In Imin. 20 see. Sllvermlne's performance was an attractive one. Benzora and Vivo started from the seven-furlongs peg, running the first half-mile in 52sec. Benzora was pulled up after going another furlong, and Vivo, continuing on, ran out her seven fujlongs in Irnfn. SSsec. Callapat and Bright Glow were companions over five furlongs, Bright Glow finishing a shade In front in Imin. 7 3-ssec. Bright Glow is in excellent nick for her Railway Handicap mission. Mendip and Paitonu did a good work-out over six furlongs, with Mendip showing to advantage, in Imin. 23sec. R. Brough’s three-year-olds. Corwen and Egeria, were associated over five furlongs. Egerla led most of the way, but Corwen hung on gamely and finished half a length in front, in Imin. 0 3-ssee. Richfield and Havering set off together over five furlongs. Havering worked sluggishly, and Richfield beat him home easily in Imin. Dsec.

The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club has received record nominations for its summer meeting on January 1 and 2, and with anything like fine weather the club should have a record gate and a record totalizator turnover as well. There are 293 nominations for the sixteen events, an average of just over IS per race. With the usual high percentage of acceptances which this club receives for its meetings, the fields should be all well above the average.

Mr. F. J. McManemin has decided not to rehandicap either Desert Glow or Aussie for their wins nt Te Awamutu. This means that Desert Glow will carry Ills original impost of 7.0 in the Auckland Cup, and Aussie his 9.9. in the Railway Handicap.

The Hawk has made a full recovery from his recent accident, and is now going as well as ever. All going well, Tlie Hawk will take his place in tlie A.R.C. Railway Handicap.

In the Auckland Cup Goshawk is weighted at 7.11 and Tinker will have to do some wasting to balance the scales at that impost. He rode at 7.13 on Saturday, which Is as light as be has been for some time, but two pounds more will have to be taken off by Boxing Day. The same rider will have his usual mount, Aussie, in the Railway Handicap.

While Tidal Failed to get In the money In the Te Awamutu Cup, he nevertheless ran a fair race. He was tailing the field along for most of the way, but when he began to move up he battled on. Mr. E. Davis, one of Tidal's owners, was quite satisfied with Tidal’s performance.

Before the race for the Te Awamutu Cup on Saturday, F. I.oomb, trainer of Prodice, who is looked upon as the chief hope of tile Aucklanders in the Derby, remarked to “Whalebone” of the "Auckland Star” that he thought she would need u race before being at her best. He certainly summed the position up to a nicety, because it was only tn the last furlong that Prodice weakened a little, and though she was fifth at tlie finish, she was not more than a length nnd a-hnlf away. "That race will do her good, nnd another before the Derby should see her at her best on Derby Day,” said her owner-trainer.

The outstanding performance at Walpa was the brilliant win of Aussie in the Flying Handicap. The crack sprinter was set a real racehorse’s job to carry lil.b. and as the next in the handicap, Nancy Lee, was in receipt of 261 b.. and others were receiving up to 481 b„ the general opinion was that Aussie would find the job beyond him But the Fortafix gelding showed that it takes a lot of weight to make a champio run like a moderate at six furlongs, and not only did he win, but he was in the lead all the way. and in the run home he was always a winner, eventually passing the judge a length and a-half ahead of Nancy Lee, with Town Bird in third place a couple of lengths back. As the six furlongs was run in Imin. 14 d-oscc., there was a fairly solid pace on all the way. and Aussie made it clear, just as he has so often done before, that with the exception of Paganelll, he can give a lot of weight to the Auckland sprinters.

For the third year In succession the Te Awamutu trainer, F. Loomb, has saddled up the winner of the Te Awamutu Cup. Two years ago he won with Phaola, last year be scored with Desert Glow, aud Hie latter won again on Saturday. Bracketed with the three-year-old Prodice, the combination was made favourite, the majority of backers having most faith tn Prodice. The filly was always handy, while Desert Glow was with the rear division, but not far away. Prodtce could not go on with it in the straight, where C. France got a great run on the rails with Desert Glow, and finishing with a lot of dash, the Day Comet gelding landed the Cup for the second year in succession, and bringing off the hat trick for his trainer.

Poltava, sire of the Auckland Cup favourite, Hoylake, has not been long at the stud in England, but already bis stock have won several valuable races, and he bids fair to make a good name for himself as a sire. As a racehorse Poltava proved himself a wonderful galloper, and he was described as one of the fastest horses of his time. Early in his career he showed phenomenal speed, and as a two-year-old he was only once beaten out of a' place in nine races. Poltava, who was bred tn 1917, is a grey horse by I’olymelus from Tagele, the dam of Tagalie. winner of the One Thousand Guineas and the Derby, and dam also of Allenby, who won the Newmarket Stakes and the St. James’s Palace Stakes and ran that good horse, Tctratema, to half a length in the Two Thousand Guineas.

Things never are as good as they were in the old days! A famous old-time English jockey was Sammy I,oates. In the course of an interview lately Loatcs said: “I don’t think they (the horses) are as good as 40 years ago. For one thing, they won’t stand being worked as hard as they used to be. They are more temperamental —as temperamental as film stars sometimes—and, consequently, they require much more careful handling. It may be because the breed gets finer and finer, but a horse certainly stood a lot more work years ago. One of the best horses I ever saw was Ormonde, who won the Two Thousand Guineas, Derby, and St. Legcr in 1886, and was better than most horses to-day.” Asked about the present-day jockeys, he said: “Well, I don’t think there is anybody riding like Tod Sloan. I developed his crouch, but riders now do not crouch enough. Sloan sat further forward than they do, but I think they would be better riders if they rode more as he did. Probably I rode in well over 1000 races, and I cannot recall how many I won. The best horse I ever rode was perhaps Cyllene, when I won the Ascot Cup. Forty-four years ago I rode a dead beat in the Derby on Harvester, and in 1895 I won the race on Sir Visto.” HOLIDAY CARNIVAL ALL THE NEWS IN THE “REFEREE” Particularly for that large army of optimists and sportsmen who love an investment on the machine, this week’s “Referee” should prove invaluable. There will be race and trotting meetings north aud south on Boxing Day, and subsequently, and the journal’s staff writers and correspondents have taken all sorts of pains to secure the latest and most reliable information on form. The resultant symposium is as complete as it is suggestive. The Auckland meetings come first in general importance. On the race side “Spectator” and “Carbine” discuss the Cup, and “Spectator” deals exhaustively with the Railway Handicap and the classic events,, as well as with the minor races on the first day. The Manawatu Racing Club’s popular fixture also opens on Boxing Day. Form for that day is examined by “Carbine," who provides a few hints for Taranaki and Walpukurau, too. In the south, the opening of the Dunedin J. C. summer meeting is the subject of reference. Equal care and trouble have been exercised by the “Referee’s” light harness exports in their special field. Intense Interest has been aroused over the Auckland Trotting Cup. which is. mostly, the Now Zealand Trotting Cup all over again. The stakes at this gathering are rich, and the quality of horses engaged represents the highest standard. Readers will find in this section a wealth of considered opinion as to the prospects of runners at Alexandra Park. This applies, in a lesser degree, to th’e fixtures at Ashburton. South Wairarapa, and other centres. Along with this feature go lists of horses, gallopers and pacers and trotters, who may be expected to perform with credit in the near future. In the spheres of racing and trotting, the “Referee” is unexcelled for the volume and authority of its news. It is indispensable to the regular followers of these groat sports. The article on breeding in the current issue is a disquisition on the Sceptre train, with special reference to Rosenor. It is contributed by an authority who writes under the pen-name of “The Yeoman.”

Perception, and Thorsby were in close order over a mile in Imin. 50see. Perception began slowly, but neither he nor Corlnax was nearly at top over the last half. It was merely an exercise gallop- , Knighttown and Taneriri ran away from Bennie and Critique over half a mile in 51 l-ssec.. both being ridden out. Golden Wedding was kept at it all through a seven-furlong gallop in Imin. 30 3-osec., the best of the morning, and she had a good weight up. . Winsome Boy ran five furlongs nicely in Imin. 6 l-ssec. Vallar was being pulled double to keep back with Botnbarder over six furlongs in Imin. 21 l-sscc. Vallar will run a brilliant gallop if he is stretched out before the meeting.

Vertlgern, looking bright, bowled over six furlongs comfortably in Imin. 20 2-5 sec. Royal Flower, all out, took Imin. 6 3-5 sec. for five furlongs, and Gold Tinge went lazily over the same distance in similar time. Subdivision showed a lot of speed In running five furlongs resolutely in Imin. 4 4-ssec. Gemlight played with Praetor over half a mile in 51 l-ssec. He is a solid youngster. Good Boy was at top to run half a in lie in 52 3-ssec. Karamu jumped hurdles in his usual 1 finished manner. i Salamander cleared four hurdles, but spoilt his display by blundering at the third. Raliepoto, jumping well, pleased more than Bizarro over a cor<»le of hurdles. Bizarro was slow, but cleared the fences well. Harbour View and Mangaiti gave a very even display over six hurdles. Both these horses are on the Improve. Abbot’s Delight was too good for Pckalahl ami Clockwork over six hurdles, tiie first-named giving a greatly improved display. He Is to race at Taranaki. Royal Form made a good impression by outjiiniplng I’ralla at every one of six hurdles, lie looks likely to race well at the coming meeting.
