BOWLS

NEW ZEALAND TEAM TO PLAY AUSTRALIA Visitors at last night’s meeting of the Wellington Bowling Centre were Messrs. A. K. Smart, of New Plymouth, and A. J. Benzie, of Christchurch, selectors (with Mr. S. M. Stone, chairman of the Dominion Council) of the Dominion bowling team which will meet sixteen rinks from the Australian States at Wellington in January. Play on January 3 will be at Hataitai, on January 4 at Thorndon, and on January 5 at Wellington. Games will commence at 2 p.m., one game being played each day. These contests were organised only last year, and this is the first time that they have been held in New Zealand. The Dominion team chosen is as follows :—E. J. Hill (Wellington), R. Although there might be a few heartburnings when the teams were published, said the selectors, they were of the opinion that their choice would meet with the approval of bowlers throughout the Dominion. MEETING OF WELLINGTON CENTRE FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY The executive committee of the Wellington Bowling Centre met last night, when Mr. M. Marks presided. The hon. treasurer, Mr. J. Kershaw, presented his report, which showed a balance of £76 Bs. 2d. Mr. Marks stated that this was quite as good as in previous years. All the clubs had now paid their levies, and a large levy had been paid by the centre to the Dominion council. A letter was received from the Marlborough centre, stating that available dates for a visit to Wellington had been considered, and it was proposed that a team should arrive in Wellington on Thursday, January 31, play on Friday and Saturday, and return to Blenheim on Monday, February 4. It was desired, if possible, to visit the clubs which had supported their Easter tournaments, and a hope was expressed that some members of the party should be split up to play against those clubs. Newtown bowlers, it was stated, had always been prominent supporters of the southern centre’s tourneys, and recently there had been rinks from Otaki, Seatoun, Karori, Lower Hutt, and Hataitai. A sub-committee was set up to deal with matters pertaining to this visit, consisting of representatives of Newtown, Hataitai, Seatoun, Lower Hutt, and Karori, with M. Chegwin as convener, with the power to incur any reasonable expense in the entertainment of the visitors. The Manawatu centre wrote suggesting that two matches should be played against the Wellington committee at Wellington. It was decided last night that this match should be played early in February, a maximum of five rinks being provided. As a very full programme lay ahead this season there might be difficulty in arranging a date. The matches could not be played on a Saturday. Games for the centre tournament will be played on Knrori. Hutt No. 1, Island Bay and Khandallah greens, finals to be held at Karori. , The greens committee reported that all the greens had been inspected and classified as follow: —First class: Eastbourne, Thorndon, Karori. Hataitai. Very' good: Petone, Hutt No. 1. Kelburn, Island Bay. Wellington Nos. 1 and 2. Good: Central, Khandallah, Johnsonville, Upper Hutt, Hutt No. 2, Kelburn No. 2 (three rinks). Island Bay No. 2 (two rinks). . Fairly good: Lyall Bav. Seatoun (six rinks). It was decided that in the match with the Australians umpires would be empowered to prohibit the use of bowls bearing a testing stamp prior to 1925. Billiards, Ltd., who up to the present time had tested bowls for the centre, had asked to be relieved of this work, and the executive last night appointed Mr. H. Meyer tester pro. tern., subject to the approval of the Dominion Council. As far as the centre tournament was concerned, all bowls to be used therein must be stamped by Billiards, Ltd,, before Friday. BOWLING FIXTURES.
