THE VOYAGES OF CAPTAIN COOK
Sir, —Sir John Findlay in his lecture ou the above subject is reported as having said that in June, 1775, Cook volunteered and was taken on H.AI.S. Eagle. This is not correct —he was on board the Eagle with Palliser in 1758, forming part of the American fleet, aud was at the taking of Louisburg. In this action five French frigates were taken and five were destroyed. In 1759 the Eagle returned to England. In 1775 Captain Cook was on his second voyage in charge of the Resolution, a vessel of 462 tons, and a crew of 112 men. The Adventure, of 336 tons, Captain Furneaux, and a crew of SI accompanied him. They were on the coast of New Zealand in that year, and anchored in Tolaga Bay on November 9, afterwards proceeding to Queen Charlotte Sound. —I am, etc., G.J.B. Gisborne, December 11.
