SUPPRESSION OF NAMES
TWO REQUESTS REFUSED.
Dominion Special Service.
Palmerston North, December li. Two requests for the supression of aceuseds’ names were made by P.dmei-*io-dav’ liC Mr' S Stouff , refused to grant it in on both occasions. Mr G 0. Petersen was the first to ask on behalf of his client, but was met with: “No, he is not going to get his name suppressed.” This was in a c as ® in which a well-known boxer was fined on two charges of assault. During a ease in which the theft of a bicycle was the charge. Mr. J. G. L. Merton said: “Your Worship. I might ask for the name to be suppressed.' “There is no chance of that, replied the Magistrate, with some emphasis. These requests about the suppresison of names are absurd. Every man that comes before the Court thinks that the name should be suppressed. Ihat portion of the Offenders’ Probation Act is meant for very young people who have made a slip, and have a chance to reform. This is a man who deliberately went out and took it.”
