WELLINGTON v. OTAGO FURTHER ALTERATIONS IN LOCAL TEAM Owing to R. de R. Worker (Hawke’s Bay) aud R. H. C. Mackenzie (University) being unable to play for Wellington against Otago in the Plunket Shield match at the Basin Reserve on December 24 the sole selector (Mr. K. H. Tucker) has chosen W. A. Baker (Midland) and N. Gallichan (Manawatu) to fill the vacancies. Baker is a sterling batsman, who has scored consistently for Wellington in Plunket Shield matches in the past. In the 1926-27 season he played in eleven innings in senior club games, reaching an aggregate of 505 runs, which included a 226 not out, Els average being 50.50 per innings. Gallichan’s inclusion will strengthen the team, as the youthful Palmerston North player is a sound, forcing batsman, a useful slow left-hand bowler, and an active fieldsman. Playing for Manawatu last season, he hit up 37 and 142 against Wanganui when Manawatu wrested the Hawke Cup from Wanganui. Defending the Hawke Cup a month later Gallichan scored 107 and 47 against Marlborough. He played a good knock for 59 for the Country against the Town at the Basin Reserve on December 7. His slow left-handed bowling should also strengthen the Wellington attack. NO PLAY IN WELLINGTON ON SATURDAY Owing to the heavy rain last week, local grounds were saturated, and pitches were so soft that all games in the various associations and leagues had to be postponed on Saturday. This is the second time this season that rain has prevented play at the week-end. SCOTS COLLEGE V. WAIRARAPA HIGH SCHOOL. A match between teams representing Scots College and Wairarapa High School will be played to-day and to-morrow. The appointed umpires are Messrs. W. Toomath and A. S. Warwick.
