MARKED ACTIVITY

OHURA-STRATFORD RAILWAY PROGRESS AT EASTERN END Dominion Special Service. Auckland, December 15. There is evidence of marked activity in the construction of the eastern end of the Ohura-Stratford railway, and excellent progress is being made, says the Taumarunui correspondent of the “Sun.” Work on the Ohura-Tokirima section is being pushed along rapidly by the Public Works Department, and every effort is being made to get the job as far ahead as possible while the summer weather lasts. A gang of steam navvies and streams of motorlorries are shaping out the route, and a large number of men are employed. Trains are now carrying material through the first tunnel, which has been completed, and the second tunnel is well under way. Necessary plant has been installed for commencing third, fourth, and fifth tunnels, and this work will be put under way at once. Section-built houses are being dispatched to the Turoto Road camp, between the two largest tunnels. This camp was cut off from headquarters by bad roads for most of the winter, but metalling operations are being hurried forward to ensure communications being kept open next year. It is reported on what appears to be reliable authority that a commencement will be made this summer with the Tokirima station yards.
