WAIPA AND OAMARU MEETINGS

DESERT GLOW AND GAY SONNET CUP WINNERS

On Saturday the racing calendar was cleared of all fixtures prior to the big carnival which will open on Boxing Day. Thei racing was at the annual fixture of the Waipa Club at Te » an the concluding day of the North Otago Jockey dub s meeting Oamaru. At Waipa the Auckland Cup candidate Desert Glow, scored in the Te Awamutu Cup, and the Railway Handicap. c^ Aussie, won the sprint. Gay Sonnet was successful in the Oamaru Cup and the Farewell Handicap went to Gold Brick. At both pla the racing was held in pleasant weather.

WAIPA MEETING DESERT GLOW WINS CUP AUSSIE SECURES FLYING HANDICAP Dominion Special Service._ Te Awamutu, December 15. After heavy rain on Friday, Saturday dawned fine for the Waipa Racing Club’s annual fixture. The attendance was about the same as last year and very fine racing took place. The going was good, despite the rain of the previous days. The totalisator investments totalled £23.989, compared with £23,112 last year. Three horses fell in the Orakau Handicap. At an inquiry the evidence showed that Just Nell was running about in the last three furlongs. Red Day getting on her heels and bringing down Ossian and Archileen. Tremain, rider of Archileen, appeared to be badly hurt, but recovered quickly. Lee. rider of Red Dny, broke his collarbone. The accident was held to be accidental. PIRONGIA HURDLES. Highflown had a few more supporters than Star of the East in the Pirongia Hurdles. After jumping the first hurdle Highflown and Gala Day cleared out from the field. Lady Spalpeen and Star of the East being their nearest attendants. With half a mile to go Highflown outjumped Gain Day at every fence and that allowed him to win easily by over a length. Lady Spalpeen was a poor third, with Star of the East and Lady Cintra next. Highflown is an improved hurdler, but it was a poor field, of which Gala Day and Lady Cintra are the likely improvers. KIHIKIHI HANDICAP. Macroom was a decided favourite over Flying Juliet in the KihiKihi Handicap. This pair were always prominent, r lying Juliet coming past Macroom in the straight .to win nicely from Te Koroke who finished well to cut Macroom out of second place. Leitrim was a bad last and seems to be knocked out temporarily. WAIPA PLATE. Indolent and Haviland were the only two backed with confidence in the M aipa Plate. Patere was first out from Roman Pearl, and he led round the turn from Unoeo and Roman Pearl, a good race home seeing the judge declare for Patere by a head from Roman Pearl, with Unoco a fair third, and Princess Rain and Haviland next. From the stand Roman Pearl appeared to win by a neck. Patere is an improver by Quin Abbey from Tetranzini. Haviland showed speed but Indolent was a disappointment.. TE AWAMUTU CUP. The Desert Glow —Prodice bracket was a good first choice for the Te Awamutu Cup. Mervette, The Lover, Prodice. Siaosi, and Paputu raced in that order to the turn, where Mervette and The Lover were fighting it out. Then Desert Glow got a great run on the fence, and in a fine finish, he won by a neck from Siaosi, with The Lover less than a length away, followed by Mervette, Prodice, aud laPa The run round the home turn won for Desert Glow. The Lover covered a little extra ground outside Mervette most of the wav, and he ran a fine race Prodice will do better next time out, although she was always near the front, as she still looked a little more above herself. Tidal was never in it. PATERANGI HANDICAP. Wenday was a hot favourite, beaten in the Paterangi Handicap, Lucy Rose leading from the barrier rise to last just long enough to beat the favourite by a head, with Scat right up, third. The winner was well handled by Tinker. ORAKAU HACK. Hakanoa a good favourite for the Orakau Hack, made no showing. Black Maire tried to win all the way, but Lunette, from third position, came fast, to beat him by a neck, with Some Lady always well up a head away, third, and Just Nell a good fourth. Archileen, Red Day, and Ossian, fell near the home turn. Lunette is a fair hack, and Just Nell is another that will do better. FLYING HANDICAP. All found good support for the Flying Handicap. Ruffles, Aussie, and. Nancy Lee were always prominent, Aussie drawing out to win very easily.from Nancy Lee, with Town Bird a fair third, and Master O’Rorke next.

The winner won like a champion, and has never been better. Nancy Lee ran an honest race, but was outclassed by the winner. Marble King and Town Bird showed plenty of speed, but could not see it out. OHAUPO HANDICAP. There was little between Awarere and The Lamb in the betting on the Ohaupo Handicap. Cynthia N. and Prince Lu carried Awarere along at a fast pace. Cynthia N. lasted just long enough to beat King Lu by half a length, with Tekproke a poor third, and Awarere fourth. Awarere failed to sustain the early pace, and The Lamb made a very poor showing. OAMARU MEETING ENDS GAY SONNET TAKES CUP FIRST RAID WINS STEWARDS’ HANDICAP By Telegraph.—Press Association. Oamaru, December 15. The Oamaru J.C.’s summer meeting concluded iu perfect weather, and there was a fair attendance. Light rain the previous night did not affect the track, which was fast. The totalisator handled £8169, making a total for the meeting of £14.870, compared with £20,736 10s. in 1925, the Inst time a two-day meeting had been held on the home course. An inquiry was held into the running of the winner of thePukeuri Trot, and the explanations of the rider and owner accepted. In the same race, the rider of Free Pointer (F. D. Henderson) was thrown, as a result of the horse stumbling. He suffered a fractured collarbone. An inquiry was held after the Cup race into Bilbo's running, and L. J. Ellis, who rode him, explained that about the five-furlong post his horse appeared, to over-reach, and afterwards would not gallop well. The explanation was accepted. • DETAILS OF THE RACING Oamaru. NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “The Watcher.”)

Horseowners and trainers are reminded that nominations for all events of the Foxton Racing Club’s annual race meeting will elose with the secretary, Mr. J. Martin, Box 1, Foxton, on Wednesday at 8 p.m. The principal events are the Foxton Cup, of 400 sovs. (including cup valued 100 sovs.)"; the Anniversary Handicap, 170 sovs.; and Herrington Handicap, 170 sovs., on the first-day; and the President’s Handicap, 250 sovs.; Wharangi Handicap, 150 sovs., and Carnarvon Hack Cup, 150 sovs. (including cup of 20 sovs.), on the second day.

Acceptances for the first day’s races at the summer meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club on December 26, 27, and 29, and final payments for the twentythird Palmerston North Stakes, will close on Tuesday at 9 p.m.

Acceptances for the summer meeting of the Waipukurau Jockey Club on December 26 will close on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Papatu, 7.0, was omitted from the list of acceptors for the Auckland Cup published in Saturday’s “Dominion.”

An acceptance list of 17 for the Auckland Cup must be considered very satisfactory considering the material available. It is significant that only three horses are carrying over Bst., and with Star Stranger arid Rapier out there is nothing to carry 9st. or over. However, the handicap was not framed on a high scale, and the preponderance of lightweights was only to be expected. The favourites hold their ground, and there is every indication that it will be the usual interesting race. At this stage Goshawk, the Elgar bracket, and Hoylake appeal as much as anything.

With 21 in the Railway Handicap the big sprint will as usual see a wide range in public fancies. The deeds of Aussie and Awarere if both go to the post have lately been sufficient to encourage the idea that the bracket will be favourite. Paganelli, Bright Glow and Nancy Lee will also have plenty of supporters. Nan-<-y Lee ran second last year with 8.2 to Awarere, 7.0, and with 7.8 this year she will have to be seriously reckoned with, the has won only one race this season, •nt her recent form makes it look as if he is shaping towards a return to her •est.

. Goblin Market is a notable absentee ■om the Railway Handicap list, but it ; significant that in his absence the table relies upon Golden Armour. It vill be remembered that there was big •ilk of Golden Armour for the Stewards Handicap, in which she ran unplaced, -s she also did in the Members Handlap the concluding day. These are her nly two starts of the season.

King Lu was a noteworthy place-getter t Waipa on Saturday. This good horse lias had a spell since September and it looks as if he will have to I,e re r^ ol ]®g with for a stake at Auckland. months ago he raced at .. t^ e n l°S ll er S He form at the summer meeting at Ellerslie.

land Cun ar’e on GoshawK Barry, ’o a n nd H C oy? a ke L Sanson, on Transformer, and H. Goldfinch on Papatu. “J* t u will stood that Transformer and Papatu w i both put up a few pounds overweight i the Auckland Cup in order to have the services of these experienced borsenien. Tinker on Goshawk also suggests a pound or two over.

Additional riding engagements at the Auckland summer meeting are. A. imker on Kinross in the Derby and Aussie ffi the Railway Handicap; H. Goldfinch on Nancy lie in the Railway Handicap; A E Ellis on Prodice in the Derby and Count Cavour in the Cup; R. Reed on Supremacy in the Foal Stakes; and I. Fostcr on Awarere in the Railway Handicap.

Pourl will probably be the only member of J. F. Tutchen’s team racing at the Auckland meeting. The Spalpeen Balding was benefited by the races he had on the flat at Takapuna, his first outings s nee the Grand National meeting. - Pour! is being got ready for hurdle races at Ellerslie. His latest work over the timber at. Te* Rapa indicates that he is in good shape.

At Wanganui on Saturday morning the tracks were heavy after the recent soaking rains. Mask ran a mile in Imin. 43sec., a good performance. Ceremony and Lysander covered five furlongs in Imin. 4soc without being extended. Alloy and Praeda went half a mile in 52sec. The Warden was worked the reverse way, moving very freely.

For a time Siaosi appeared to race migenerously, but a course at hurdle racing appears to have made him more .reliable, and at present Siaosi is showing good form. If raced over fences at the coming meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, he will prove very troublesome at the finish.

Pink Coat, the winner of The Shorts at the Oamaru meeting, is a two-year-old gelding trained by E. J. Ellis at Washdyke for Mr. J. M. Samson. The winning youngster was sired by the imported English horse, Hunting Song, from Red Edna, by All Red—Edna May 11. At the blood stock sales at Trentham in January last Pink Coat was disposed of as a yearling and was purchased by Air. Samson at 150 guineas.

First Sight has been causing F. D. Jones some anxiety during the last week or two, having shown signs of soreness more than once since he raced at South Canterbury. The trouble does not appear to be serious, however, and the Gay Lad gelding is working along in good style. He will not fulfil his Auckland engagements, but if he continues to train on all right, F. D. Jones will bring him to the Alanawatu and Marton meetings, with Toawai and Belcaire as mates. This looks a very useful team, likely to earn some money.

P. V. Mason will leave home on Tuesday night for Auckland, with Philippic, Golden Armour, and the two-year-old, Honour, who will represent Air. G. D. Greenwood at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting. They have got through a lot of useful work lately, and they should be ready to show their best form at the Ellerslie carnival. Each of the trio, in fact, looks a likely winner on the trip, as they arc all more forward than when they raced at Riccarton last month.

F. Christinas will make thq trip to Auckland with Red Heckle and Zeuxis. They have been given plenty of useful work lately, and they arc In excellent fettle.

T. H. Gillett will leavely early this week for Auckland with Count Cavour, Amor, and Wharncliffe. They have done exceptionally well lately and they look a useful lot for the Ellerslie meeting. Count Cavour will strip a much improved horse compared with what he has shown in earlier races this season. Amor is better now than at any previous stage of his career. Wharncliffe has come on a lot latelj’ and he should play his part well in hurdle races on the trip.

■T. McCoiube has Crown Area, Moorgas and Court .Tester looking in good health, and he will bring the trio north early this week. Crown Area and Moorgas have done well since they came to Riccarton. while Court Jester has started to give evidence of developing into a useful horse. W. Stone is keeping Silver Paper and Aspiring at useful tasks, without setting them anything particularly strenuous. They look well in view of Manawatu engagements. RICCARTON NOTES SATURDAY’S TRAINING OF LITTLE INTEREST Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, December 16. The conditions were unpleasant during the early training hours at Riccarton on Saturday. Following on several days of rain, the weather cleared on Friday, but there were more heavy showers on Saturday morning. The inside of the trial grass track was open. It had dried up wonderfully, and provided good galloping ground, but the work was not exciting. A large number 'of horses was out, hut smaa were sjven qsAy oaxv tftgka, aad

of those who galloped the majority did short sprints. P. V. Mason commenced proceedings working his team the reverse way. Those out included Honour, Golden Armour, and Philippic, who are to represent the stable at Auckland, but they were not sent along fast, being confined to useful tasks. Moorgas and Court Jester were given an easy half-mile sprint, while J. McCombe’s other Auckland candidate, Crown Area, had Pangolin as a mate in similar work.

Spode and After Ten, who are getting ready for the West Coast meetings, sprinted three furlongs up the back in 40sec. Rock Drill and Swoopalong were well matched while running half a mile in 50 3-ssee, a performance which Sudden Storm and Prickles equalled. Childsplay did the best sprint of the morning, half a mile in 49 2-ssec. She did it in brilliant fashion.

Front Rank and Toawai were companions in a working gallop of six furlongs. Front Rank pleased, but Toawai did not show to the best advantage.

First Sight left a mile behind in Imin. 48 4-ssec. without being required to do his best at the finish. He moved short when trotting earlier, but he galloped very freely. ' t , The two-year-old, Semper Paratus, had Full Feather as a mate in a half-mile sprint run in 50sec. These two, who are more than half-brothers, have been responsible for some good track gallops lately. . Count Cavour was sent a mile and a quarter by himself. He moved freely all the way. and gave the impression that he was anxious to go faster. •Limerick ran half a mile, but he was under a strong pull. The champion is in the best of health. Tommy Dodd finished in front of Silver Paper and Aspiring in a three-furlongs sprint a long the back in 38 4-ssec. Tommy Dodd is making good progress. His two mates have not been seriously tested lately. They will probably be raced at the Manawatu meeting. Caterpillar left half a mile behind in 51 2-ssee., and was going freely all through the gallop. Pledge was travelling better than Greyfinch at the end of half a mile dash. Belcaire and Pahautanui were on terms after running half a mile in 54sec., Moratorium taking 55sec. by himself. Silver Coot had Noteworthy as a mate in a quiet half-mile lip the back, Pixie Gold getting through similar work alone. The first-named pair are .to race at Manawatu and Walrarapa. . Sir Roy was given an easy half-mile by himself. His appearance suggests that he will pay his way on his holiday trip to the North Island. Battle Colours occupied 54 2-ssec. in a half-mile sprint, but he was not doing his best.

Rapier was given useful work on the sand. He has no holiday engagements, but he is in robust health and he can be back to his best form very soon.

A number of other horses got through light and useful tasks, but the morning’s work was not very instructive. The Riccarton horses who are to race at the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting will be shipped north on Tuesday night and will continue the journey from Wellington by train on Wednesday. Mr. G. D. Greenwood’s team for Auckland will consist) of Golden Armour, Philippic and the two-year-old Honour They have made good progress lately and their racing at Ellerslie will be followed with interest by many southern admirers. T. H. Gillett’s stable will be represented nt Auckland by Count Cavour, Wharncliffe and Amor, all of whom have been working well. The Count is bowling along with freedom, which characterised his work in his best days. Crown Area, Moorgas and Court Jester, who will comprise J. McCombe s team for Auckland, are all in the best of health. Court Jester looks well after his two races at Ashburton, while the other pair have both gone ■ n the right way since they came here from the north. . , „ Red Heckle and Zeuxis bear a welltrained appearance and F. Christinas should get some money with them at the Auckland meeting. First Sight will not do the Auckland trip, but if he trains on satisfactorily F. D. .Tones will take him to the Manawatu and Marton meetings _ with Toawai and the two-year-old Belcaire as his mates. They look a useful team. A. E. Wormaid is likely to do his noliday racing on the West Coast with Spode and Pangolin, although the latter has southern engagements also. Pangolin has built up appreciably since he has been at Riccarton. DUNEDIN HANDICAPS Bv Telegraph.—Press. Association. Tlmaru. December If!. The following handicaps have been declared by Air. C. E.
