RESCUE AT SEA
PRESENTATIONS TO lONIC’S
CREW
Recognition of the good service performed by the officers and men of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion liner lonic in the rescue of the crew of the French schooner Daisy in the English Channel on Good Friday, 1927, has been made by the French Government, which has presented them with silver medals and certificates. On October S, at Southampton Docits, the Mayor of Southampton (Aiderman Mrs. L. M. Foster Welch) handed to Mr. W. F. Poustie, formerly fifth officer of the lonic, and now. sixth officer of the Homeric, his medal and certificate. In making the presentation, the Mayor said that such men as Mr. Poustie had been the backbone of the British nation, and had formed the Empire throughout the world. Realising that a small ship was in distress, he and his colleagues had willingly and gallantly risked their lives in order to save others. Such an action was typical of the British pluck and spirit of which the nation is so proud. M. Emile Feer, the French Consul at Southampton, who represented bls Government, congratulated Mr. Poustie on what he had done, and also his colleagues. He was pleased to learn that Mr. Poustie had been promoted from the lonic to the Homeric. It was good to see that the company which he served had recognised his service. Mr. P. E. Curry, Southampton manager of the White Star Line. Captain F. B. Howarth, late commander of the Homeric, and Captain J. King, of the Board of Trade, added their congratulations, the last-named mentioning that Mr. Poustie had previously received a British life saving medal.
