December 20—Ashburton T.C. Summer. December 21—Winton T.C. Annual. December 21—Wyndham K.C. Annual (two events). December 21—South Wairarapa T.C. Annual. NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Overcheck.”) The summer meeting of the New Brighton Trotting Club will open to-day. The acceptances generally are good, while in the Trial and Improvers’ Handicaps there are rather more than desirable from t)ie point of view of an even chance for all. .The first race, which is due to comingnee at 12.30 p.m., is the Trial Handicap, 'oil one and a half miles, for unhoppled trotters. Sixteen are on scratch, but not ofte of them, has yet done anything of any consequence. Tot Logan is reported to ftave speed, but she has so far failed in jAit-bllc. A horse called Coal Light ran eecoiW to Signor at the Waikato Club’s meeting last March, registering 3.35 1-5. Whetfler i this horse is identical with the Cole Wight entered in this race I am unable to say at the moment. His handicap, 3.5k\, suggjests that it is not, but the two are; to all intents and purposes Identical, .and so it is hardly likely that a second ho.Vse would have been allowed the same name! Sduttle is one of the popular ones in so Uthern circles. Brandean ran second to Eva Reta at Greymouth, in which race Scuttle, Brent Boy, and Accumulator wen) Unplaced. Of those further back, Koro .Pefler may do best. A surprise may be An store, but Brandean, Koro Peter, and Scuffle should go well. IMPROVERS’ (HANDICAP; 3.40 class. One mVle and a half. After registering 3-29 1-5 at Ashburton on Saturday, Star Lady is likely to attract attention, but she ‘should not have things all her own way, as there are several promising horses in the race. Last season His Lordship ran t bird to Baron Bingen and Free Advice at 1 . New Brighton, and was similarly placedbehind Native Hero and Free Advice (it Mjfcllington in March, his time in the latter' race being 3.37 1-5. Harold Lee went 3.39® 1-5 at Wyndham last March, and showeU fair form in the Hutt Park Trial HanVlicap last mouth, finishing fourth, Sti.tr Lady beuig unplaced. Danny Boy spitl Jackie Login, too, are entitled to respect. The firstnamed ran third to Liniixsa and Roddy at Forbury, while the latter ran third to Dilworth and Arikitoa at Greyfiiouth in Olctober. Further back there are Pet Locanda, Sonoma Child, and Hinkler, but with, such a large numbei* ill frond: of them they may find difficultly in gritting through. Possibly His Lordship, Harold Lee, and Star Lady will comn in for most support. MACE MEMORIAL: 4.40 class. Two miles. Of the first four on the list, Mataigouxi makes the strongest appeal, ms sly: is a genuine customer, and is a good stayer. Shadowland, on 4.37, rjji 4.39 3-5 when he won the Manawatu Cup from' Vesuvius last March, and: 4.40 1-5 when De followed Jolly Pet home at Oamaru in May. Being a young horse, he should be capable of something better now. Sarelja was third , at New Brighton last March to Sea ' and Avenger, her time being 4.3< l-<>, the ; winner going 4.g2 3-5. Avenger amd Billy I Sea now meet Sitrella on 12 yarits better terms, but notwithstanding. I am prepared to see Sarella d 6 best on this occasion. Real Light has now sturck form, 'and is '

profered to either Sunfish or Harvest Child. Matagouri, Shadowland, and Sarella may come in fur the best support. BOWHILL HANDICAP; 2.55 class. One mile and a quarter.. Nan Brent should be all the better for the race she had here, and the work she has done since. Exclusive usually begins smartly, and will be suited by the distance. Hackthorne is held in esteem down south, but he may be reserved tor the mile saddle later iu the day. Young Bingen won over nine furlongs at the BanKS Peninsula meeting in October. Rose Marie is smart, and she should give a good account of herself. Bonnio 1 rince won by three lengths from Lightfoot at Banks Penisula, but Young Bingen was then conceding him 72 yards, whereas now lie is in receipt of 12. Athuione is consistent, but a mile and a quarter may not be quite far enough for him. 1 ossibly Nan Brent, Exclusive, and Rose Marie will be the public selections. DASH HANDICAP; 2.19 class. One mile. Of tlie scratch division, White Sun may find most favour. He finished well up at Wellington. Next to White Sun, Great Triumph appeals most, and he should be a particularly good horse this season. Of the others, Searchlight Lad and Granite City may do best, but it is doubtful whethe they will be able to overtake M kite Sun and Great Triumph. SEA VIEW HANDICAP; 4.50 class. Two miles. This race is for the nnhoppled trotters. All Peters, Repute, and New Metford on scratch should go well, but if Trampcrisp keeps down he may prove equal to beating them. At Forbury the first day lie won l>y three lengths from All Peters and Repute when they all started from the same mark. All Peters is possibly the steadiest of the three. New Metford defeated Nancy Bingen at New Brighton in September, when conceding 96 yards, while a little later he went 4.51 4-5 from 144 yards behind in a 5.6 class. With a clear field in front of him lie appears nicely placed in tliis race on 4.50. Sea Queen ran second to Nelson Ata at Oamaru, and judging on the latter’s showing at Forbury, this was quite a good performance, as she conceded Nelson Ata 24 yards. New Metford was fourth In this particular race. Of those further back, Lady Fan and Sarsaparilla may be in most demand, but Sea Queen, Ail Peters, and New Metford will have a solid following. WAINONI HANDICAP; 2.52 class. One mile and a quarter. Warepa and Milo Minto should have friends in this race. Of tho pair, the latter may do best. At Oamaru in October she ran second in the Pukeuri Handicap, of a mile and a quarter in saddle, Warepa,, in receipt of 12 yards, being third. Arran Chief, who likes the distance, is preferred to either Sahib or Firpo, though the lastnamed is going well these days. Of the others, Dundas Boy, who was second to Real Light in the Caversham Handicap at the recent Forbury’ meeting, should give a good account of himself. Jolly Chimes registered 2.45 1-5 at Addington in November, and is” not badly treated in being placed on 2.47. Addington, however, is at least two or three seconds faster than New Brighton. Arran Chief, Milo 1 Minto, and Firpo may be in the tiring lino at the finish. The day’s racing will conclude with the Electric Handicap, of one mile, in saddle. Nino are engaged, and with only 24 yards between them the race should be it good one. Hackthorne may be favourite. Exclusive, Dick Logan, and Audience are a useful trio, and of these the last-named may do best. Loburn finished second to Clief at the South Canterbury meeting, registering 2.13 1-5. and is now on 2.15. Aivira races well in saddle, though her past record is nothing to speak of. Hackthorne, Loburn, and Audience will all be well supported.

An unusual accident occurred on a bend near Seddon on a recent morning (says Hie ‘'Marlborough Express”). A car containing a party of shearers, was approaching the bend from one side and saw the County Council’s gravel cart ahead of him. Simultaneously a motor truck approached from the other direction. Each driver could see the gravel cart, but neither was aware of the other's presence. Both attempted to pass the gravel cart at the same time and the car slipped over a steep bank. It came to a stop still on its wheels and with the engine running, being undamaged.
