UNIVERSITY EXAMINATIONS

Sir, —Professor T. A. Hunter, Victoria University College, informed me that candidates who sat at the November examinations and possessed of any justifiable grievance should state the nature of such, in writing, care of the registrar of the University of New Zealand, Wellington, who will then forward same to the governing body for consideration. In the interests of the candidates themselves and likewise that of the general public,-1 trust this will be done. It must be understood that the general public has more than a small interest in the New Zealand University, as I can show and prove by the New Zealand Official Year. Book, 1928 (page 238). It reads: “By the New Zealand University Amendment Act, 1926, the constitution of the university has been altered, so that it now actually consists of four university colleges.” The constituent colleges receive annual statutory Government grants towards meeting the expenses of their general maintenance. These grants are now as follow: Auckland University College, £10,600; Victoria University College, £10,600; Canterbury University College, £3600; and Otago University College, £8200; making a. total of £33,000 per annum. The colleges are also in receipt of rents from endowments, Canterbury and Otago University Colleges being the most richly endowed. This proves that the public has a very real interest in the universities. , . Mr E. T. Norris, registrar of the University of New Zealand, Wellington, in his reply of November 21. does not. deny the fact that the matriculation examinations nre to be held in the Winter Show buildings. Why? The whole management of the November examinations calls for a searching inquiry in the interests of the unfortunate candidates and the nublic. —I am, etc., P E. M. DES LANDES. Wellington, November 24.
