While crossing a ditch at Lower Hutt shortly after noon on Saturday W. J.Vernon, a civil servant, of 3 Arawa Road, fell and fractured his left leg. After being attended to by the Free Ambulance he was removed to the Public Hospital. A fair amount of damage was done to orchards in the Wairoa district by the recent rains (says the Napier “Telegraph”), though the full effect will not be apparent until later. In some instances the foliage has been blackened and the fruit pitted as if struck by hailstones. The second spraying of the season is now due, and the weathqr shows signs of improvement.
