TROTTING

WELLINGTON NOVEMBER MEETING

JOLLY CHIMES WINS CHIEF RACE

(By

“Overcheck.”)

The weather conditions were perfect for the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting at Hutt Park on Saturday, and this added materially to the enjoyment of the days racing. On most of the races speculation was brisk, and this resulted in the totalisator figures showing an increase of over and above the total for Ihe coin esding meeting last year. The sum ot £-8,566 was put through the machine, representing an increase of £lOB6 10s. on the £27.479 10s. last year. The totalisator staff, under Mr. IV. Talbot, did excellent work. The arrangement whereby the members’ cars were parked at the western end of the ground obviated the serious congestion which was so noticeable on previous occasions. . The attendance was very satisfactory considering the counter-attraction of the pageant in town, but was a good ileal short of that at the last meeting, when Kingsford Smith and his associates wetc I>I J S< Bryce, jun., driver of Wainoni in the Railway Handicap, was fined £1 for continuously looking round. HUTT PARK TRIAL. Hinkler was always a good favourite for this event, and duly justified the support accorded himfl At the start ulatrice failed to go away right, and caused some interference to the horses near and behind her. Hinkler and Rafa began best of the scratch division, and led round the bend out of the straight from a bunched field, After two furlongs had been covered the pair were still in command from Harold Lee, Lightfoot, and Security. There was no material alteration over the next three furlongs, but as the held ran past the stand Baron Bingen made a forward move, and continuing his run round the eastern bend, reached third position, Rafa being in the lead with Hinkler trailing him. As the field turned into the straight Hinkler had charge from Baron Bingen, Harold Lee, Rafa, and Lightfoot. About a hundred yards from home Hinkler put in a skip, but settled down again in the next stride, and at the post had an advantage of two lengths from Baron Bingen, with Rafa half a head away third. Harold Lee wag next, with Lightfoot fifth. NAI NAI HANDICAP. Black Palm and Tot ' Logan were scratched for the Nai Nai Handicap,, leaving eight runners, of whom Nancy Bingen and Victor Bingen were most favoured. For some reason Ixitty 1 tiicii was neglected, possibly because she appears to be affected with stringhalt, which, however, does not manifest itself when she is racing. The leaders immediately after the start were Cairnvale, Great Way, Kyra, Nancy Bingen, and Victor Bingen, but as they rounded the eastern bend Great Way broke and upset the leaders, and before they settled down again Kitty Patch ran past them and took the lead, the order down the back being Kitty Patch, Hardy Grattan, and Lonesome. As they went past the stand Kitty Patch (hard held) led Lonesome, Hardy Grattan. Great Way, and Kyra. Great Way and Hardy Grattan broke on the bend, losing a lot ol ground. Racing along the back Lonesome broke, Great Way putting in a smart run which he spoilt bv again breaking. Lonesome then went after Kitty Patch, but again went to a break. Eventually Kitty Patch won .by a length from Lonesome, with Nancy Bingen, finishing well, in third place.' The next to finish were Great Way and Hardy Grattan. ■ -RAILWAY HANDICAP.

nieTioi-c' ahiT Rollo were scratched for the Railway Handicap, in which Great Logan was installed a good favourite. At the start; Sylvia Logan swung across the course, causing some interference, but luckily no collision occurred. George the Fourth, ’Wainoni, Great Logan, Exclusive, and Athalone were in the lead round the bend and down the back stretch, where Travis Axwortby anil Mercury were seen putting in a smart run. As the field reached the stand at the end of the first round Wainoni led from Great Logan, Kiowa, Athalone, Exclusive, and Zella, with Florrie Pointer and Cora Tacks last. Racing down the back the last time, there was no very material change in positions, Wainoni and Great Logan continuing to bowl along freely in front. Travis Exworthy was in a fairly handy position ns the bend was reached, but his effort in the first round left him without a punch. Mercury encouraged his supporters' by improving his position on the bend, but the effort was a short-lived

, one. About helf-way down .the straight Hooper called on Great Logan, who had no difficulty in disposing of Wainoni, who, however, ran a very good race. Athlon*? put in one of his characteristic finishing runs to get third. Exclusive, Nan Brent, and White Suu headed the others. NOVEMBER HANDICAP. A good start was effected, but they had not gone far before Menember broke and dropped right back. Marshal Neil commenced very quickly, and led from Jolly Chimes. Wharepiana and Golden Bubbles. These four were in the same order passing the' stand the first time, with Billy Sea, Talent. Avenger, Mate o’ Mine, Pageant, and Free Advice following in that order. Racing down the back Pageant went up a bit. Free Advice trailing him through. There was no material change in positions until about three furlongs from the finish, when Free Advice was given her head, and sustaining her run in a Xi’tily remarkable manner, cut her opponents down one by one, but could not reach Jolly Chimes, who won by a length. Wharepiana was a head away third, and Marshal Neil fourth. WILFORD HANDICAP. Kitty Patch declined her engagement in the Wilford Handicap, having been rehandicapped 48 yards, from which mark she could probably have won had she started. The field got away in fair order, but first Victor Bingen and then Great Way’and Cairuvale broke. Nancy Bingen led found the bend, and past the stand from Victor Bingen, Kyra, Great Way, Cairnvale. Lonesome, and Miss Leda, the latter being about 100 yards behind. The order was the same ns they raced down tl back, but Great Way and Lonesome both lost ground through breaking. A little further on Nancy Bingen broke, Kyra following suit, leaving Victor Bingen in the lead. Racing down the straight the second time Victor Bingen led from Kyra, Nancy Bingen, Great Way, and Lonesome. Lonesome. Kyra, and Great Way each broke again in the concluding round. Victor Bingen leading into_ the straight by a couple of lengths. Nancy Bingen finished best, and won by a length from Victor Bingen, with Great Way five lengths away third, followed by Lonesome and Kyra. It was anything but a good contest, as not one of the contestants trotted solidly throughout. MIDDLE CLASS HANDICAP. A good start was effected in the Middle Class Handicap, the early leaders being Dilworth, Kiowa, Great Delight, Florrie Pointer, and Athalone. At the stand, Zella and Real Light were well up with the field. After six furlongs had been covered, Dilworth was still in charge from Kiowa, who faltered, and interfered with those immediately behind him. one being Athalone. As the western bend was reached, Real Light was lying third to Dilworth and Kiowa. At the stand, these three led from Florrie Pointer, Zella, and Athalone, who had made up a lot of his lost ground. Kiowa dropped back in the last round, the leaders into the straight being Dilworth, Reul Light, and Zella. In a good race home, Real Light proved too good for his younger rival, while Athalone headed Zella. But for the interference he suffered curly in the race, Athalone would have been first or second. SHARPE HANDICAP. This Abbey stood on the mark, otherwise the start in the Sharpe Handicap was a good one. Marshal Neil immediately assumed command, and pacing resolutely,'was never headed.-Passing the stand the first time, Pearl Coronado was lying second, followed by Granite City, Brutus, High Jinks, Bing Boy, and Acre, The Abbey being about half a furlong behind. Down the back, Brutus was under pressure, while the.riders of Granite City and Bing Boy were straining every effort to bridge the gap between them and Marshal Neil. The latter, however, never looked like being overtaken, and in the end won rather nicely from Bing Boy and Granite City. Brutus was rather disappointing. ELECTRIC HANDICAP. The field in the Electric Handicap moved away nicely, but Logan Park tangled almost immediately, losing a lor of ground, while Quality was somewhat slow in reaching high gear. After going a furlong, the order was. Audacious, Black Admiral, Quality, Talent, and Epigram, with Logan Park gradually improving his position. Rounding the beau Edwards took Black Admiral to the front, and he led into the straight from Audacious and Quality. Racing down the straight. Tompkinson brought Logan 1 ark along with a splendid run, and ho was lying third when they had completed six furlongs, Talent heading the others some three or four lengths further back., Logan Park again showed great speed in the back stretch, but Black Admnal led into the straight, from Audacious, with Logan Park handily placed, but the first-named was showing signs of weakening. In a great finish, Audacious, hanging on tenaciously, won by a veiy narrow margin from Logan 1 nrl; : F. lt , h Black Admiral third, and Talent fourt>i. The unlucky horse was undoubted v Logan Park, who put up a wonder ul performance in running losing two or three seconds at.the com mencement of the race.
