FIVE DOUBTFUL SEATS STATE OF PARTIES IN HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES PROSPECTS IN THE SENATE (United. Press'. Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Interest in the Federal elections is now focused on five doubtful seats in the House of Representatives, The Labour Party is expected to win several Senate seats Troili the Government. Sydney, November 22. Political interest in the Federal elections is'tibw focused on five doubtful seats in the House of Representatives, namely, the Herbert and Kennedy seats in Queensland; Boothby, in South Australia : and Franklin and Denison, .in Tasmania. Present indications are that Government candidates will win three and Labour two. the absentee votes, which are now being counted, favouring the retiring members in each instance. It is aoteworthy that these particular electorates invariably provide neck-and-neck tussles, with a mere handful of votes separating the candidates at the finish. The present state of parties for the House of Representatives is as follows Nationalist 29 ’ Country Party 14 Labour ........ 27 Doubtful ................ 5 Counting for the Senate is still proceeding, and the prospects are that Labour will win from the Government three seats each in New South Wales, South Australia, and Queensland, a total of nine, but the issue in Victoria and Western Australia is still doubtful. Encouraged by the result of the Federal elections, the Australian Labour Party has endorsed five hundred candidates as Labour representatives at the municipal elections in New South Wales on December 1. This is the first occasion when a concerted attempt has been made to contest elections for all councils and shires throughout the State.
