“NELSON” SYSTEM IN AUCKLAND.
Dominion Special Service. . Auckland, November 21. Bible reading; in State schools was briefly referred to this morning's meeting of ■ .'the Auckland. Education Board,, when the school committees at Pirdngia and Hdwiek applied for: permission to introduce the “Nelson” system of Bible reading into their respective schools.; A referendum had. been taken in each instance, parents agreeing, to the scheme in both cases. . .. ’ '
Tile chairman, Mr. A. Burns, said applications in all cases-were granted after a referendum, permission being subject to the condition that there should be no compulsion. Bible rending could be done cither before or after school hours, firadmitted that, in Rome cases Bible reading was done during the first half-liour of Ihe school day, but that was hot a violation of school hours in reality, because the Act-provided for four hours teaching, per jiiiy. while Bchools, were giving five hours. Parents who were against Bible reading could keep their children away during the half-hour occupied in reading the Bible.
