AWARD FOR LIFE-SAVING
The highest award for proficiency in life-saving, the diploma of the Royal Life-Saving Society, was presented to Miss Beryl L. Buxton at a meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Head Centre of the Royal Life-Saving Society on Wednesday evening. The presentation was made by Mr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P., Deputy-Mayor. In presenting the diploma and badge to Miss Buxton, Mr. Sullivan said that the task was a very interesting one and a very pleasant one. It could be realised that botli physique and mental vitality and determination were needed to qualify. The test was not a light one. In fact the task was nearly as difficult as fighting a Parliamentary election. Since tlie test was instituted thirty years ago, only 809. people had qualified throughout the whole world. Seven of these awards had come to Canterbury, and he congratulated Miss Buxton and -Canterbury as a whole on the honour attained, for it was the blue ribbon of the life-saving world. He added that the matter of the annual grant was now, he thought, passed the stage of being a matter of anxiety. He hoped that the day would come when the Government would provide funds for teaching all school teachers this work so that they in turn could pass on their knowledge.
