THE RACING WORLD

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

“The Watcher.”)

J. Barry will be riding at the Takapuna meeting, and in addition to the mounts from J. T. Jamieson's stable, will have the ride on Gold Money, in the Takapuna Blate.

Bright Glow, according to J. Fryer, is unlikely to race at Feilding. Her next meeting will probably be Auckland. Mendip will rafe at Manawatu, and either Marton or Stratford.

O. Cox will confine most of his attention during the holiday meetings to Stratford. Reremoana is in the Palmerston North Stakes, and although a trip with one horse is not exactly convenient at that period, Reremoana will, no doubt, be a competitor. He has won this race on the last two occasions.

Mandane will race nt Manawatu during the holidays, but Metellus will probably go to Ellerslie, where one of his engagements is in the Derby. Metellus did not stand his first day’s race at Otaki too well, but despite a tucked-up appearance, he nearly won on the second day. Metellus has improved a lot since he last raced, and considering the moderate three-year-old form to date, and the absence of Nightmarch from the northern classic, it looks good business to send him to Ellerslie.

At the conclusion of the racing at Otaki, on Thursday, T. Metcalf left for Timaru, where lie has several engagements.

A promising three-year-old made his racing debut at Otaki in Arikinui, who beat all but Richfield in the maiden race, on Thursday. Arikinui is by Chief Ruler from Celmisia, who is by Hymettus, from the Birkenhead more, By By, who left those good horses, Marquetour and Mark Time to King Mark. At the holiday meeting, Arikinui should prove a good stake earner.

Joy Bird, who won the concluding event at Otaki on Wednesday, has been back with 11. Telford only three weeks, but she is a lively mare who comes to band quickly, and in addition, her class assisted towards her victory. Last year, Joy Bird showed good form. She was only just beaten in the Manawatu Cup, by Lady Desmond, ran fourth in the Wellington Cup, and at Wanganui, in February, ran third in the Cup, and beat Mandane on the second day, in the Earle Stakes. She appears to be a better mare this year, and all going well, should be in line to win one or two first-class handicaps.

Bourse was a maiden prior to her win at Otaki, on Thursday. She has been shaping towards a win recently, but she was doing her very best to win after having a beautiful run all the way, and her effort was not very promising for any substantial improvement.

Celerity 11. was scratched for all engagements at the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting, at 9 a.m. on Thursday. The English-bred mare was among, those entered for the Auckland Cup.

Wiltshire, who has been on the easy list since Lis return from his success in the Grand National Steeplechase, at Riccarton, in mid-August, has been put into work again by R. C. Syme, at Te Rapa. Wiltshire has put on condition during the off period, and it will be New Year before he will be ready to tackle serious duty again.

Paganelli will be ridden in the Feilding Stakes by L. G. Morris. The latter has ridden the Lord Qucx gelding on only one previous occasion. That was in the sprint, on the second day of the Auckland club's spring meeting, when he got his mount home in front. Paganelli is a much improved horse since then. It is the intention of liis trainer, M. J. Carroll, to send Paganelli south early next week in charge of one of the stable hands.

At the West Australian Turf Club’s races, on November 10, Autobiography, 9.4, by Sutalri from Egotism, a five-year-old brother to the Oaks winner, Pride, won the Grove Handicap, 6 furlongs, in a field of 15. He started favourite, and won by a head. On the same day, Mr. Acton Adams’s Tione, 8.10 (Solferine — Rosalia), won the Stewards’ Handicap, 7 furlongs, from Kilreid, 10.6, and Indian Sage, 8.3, and twelve other starters, Tione, who is a brother to Roseday, started favourite, and won by a length and a quarter. He is one of the team recently taken over by C. Christie for Mr. Acton Adams, and is the only one of the New Zealand-bred horses mentioned that has not been bought by West Australians. Considering that Kilreid is now 10 years old, it does not say much for Tione and Indian Sage that they received such a concession in weight. Kilreid, by the way, is a half-brother to Grand National, and was bred by Mr. C. F. Vallance.

The latest Australian mail brings the news that on the same day as Gothic created the new mile and a half record in the C. B. Fisher Plate at Flemington Bacchus broke Commendation's mile and three-quarter record in the V.R.C. Handicap. He ran 2min. 57-}sec., which is isec. better. The cables reported the time as 2min. 57isec., which was equal to Commendation’s record. In connection with these performances the sectional times for Bacchus’s race were as follow : First two furlongs in 27Jsec., next half in 49isec., mile to half-mile in 49Jsec., last half in 50Jsec., last six furlongs in Imiu. 14Jsec., and last mile in Imin. 40sec. Sectional times show that Gothic came home in great style. The first two furlongs occupied 27sec., first half-mile in 51Jseci, second half-mile 51 sec., last half-mile 47isec., last six furlongs Imin. 13sec., and last mile Imin. 38}sec. Besides beating the Australasian record, Gothic cut the Flemington record previously held by Valorem by a second and a half. The stake brought Gothic’s earnings close to £lB,OOO, and his record stands: 26 starts for twelve firsts, four seconds, and eight thirds. Only twice has he been unplaced, nnd he has won over distances from six furlongs to a mile and a half. Gothic was unbeaten nt weiglit-for-age nt the Caulfield and Flemington spring meetings.

There is nothing like being optimistic. In England last month the will of a woman, who left estate to the value of £5648, contained the following proviso: “In the event of my ever winning the Calcutta Derby sweep, or any part of it, the amount received is to be divided between my two daughters.”

Mr. P. Miller bred Demost, who ran third in the Melbourne Cup; was responsible for the mating of Saltash and Soldier’s Love, which produced Strephon, who ran second; and his stallion, Demosthenes, sired the winner, Statesman. It must be a record for one studmaster to be identified with the breeding of three place-getters in one Melbourne Cup. Demost was sold as a yearling for 550gns., and Mr. Miller disposed of Soldier’s Love when she was carrying Strephon.

In other parts of the world it is not unusual for jockeys to travel to race meetings by aeroplane. Now horses are being conveyed in similar fashion. Bearing on this, the following clipping is from the Lexington “Thoroughbred Record” of October 13: “The first time on record in America when a horse was shipped' by aeroplane occurred in California a few days ago. Baron Long sent his good colt Wirt G. Bowman from San Diego to the Tanforan track near San Francisco by air. The distance was 800 miles, and the thoroughbred suffered no inconvenience from his trip. The fast colt was given a trial of threeeighths of a mile shortly after he was landed from the aeroplane and was timed in 40sec. This latest way of shipping racers will eventually become popular in that it would enable a horse to race one afternoon over the New York tracks and fill his engagement over a Chicago track the nwrt afternoon.’

Word comes from Ellerslie that Boniform died on November 10. Boniform had been pensioned off on Mr. J. Muidrew’s farm, and although apparently in the best of health and condition, dropped dead in a paddock. Boniform was bred by the late Mr. G. G. Stead, and had an unbeaten career on the turf. He raced on only three occasions. As a two-year-old, he won the A.J.C. Breeders’ Plate, ami on his return to his native land, he won the Great Northern Derby and Great Autumn Handicap. It may be mentioned in passing that Mr. P. E. Baldwin, in the course of an interesting article 011 the Otterden family, recently published in the New Zealand “Referee,’' credits Boniform with the New Zealand Derby, instead of the Great Northern Derby. Boniform cantered home in the Great Autumn, and was then retired to the stud. He ran his last race in the colours of Messrs. W. G. and G. L. Stead, after being purchased for 1500 guineas at the dispersal of their father’s stud. Although Boniform holds rank with the select band of unbeaten horses on the turf, he achieved his greatest fame as a sire. He sired Scion, a winner of the New Zealand Cup, and Auckland Cup in the same season. New Zealand Derby winners in Bon Revo and The Toff, an Oaks winner in Bonny Helen, a Canterbury Cup winner in The Toff, and a Breeders’ Plate winner in Almoner, who also won the Middle Park Plate. The Toff also won the G.N. Foal Stakes, and G.N. Steeples, and Bon Rev?, the G.N. Derby, and G.N. Hurdles. Other good winners lie got included Bonetter, Heathercote, Bon Ton, Eligible, Flora Macdonald, Pariform, Bonny Doreen (G.N. Oaks), Bonnie Maid (G.N. St. Leger), and many of lesser note. Boniform was, however, overshadowed at the stud by his elder halfbrother, the famous Martian. As Boniform is a member of the Sunshine family, and a tail male descendant of Musket, his mares have proved very valuable for the stud. He got the dams of Count Cavour, Egotism, Reremoana, The Banker, Lady Cavendish, Ark Royal, and his daughters will, no doubt, keep Boniform’s name green in the Stud Book and on the turf.

New Zealand trainers may be interested to hear that a Sydney farrier has invented a shoe that practically amounts to an artificial frog, and results already point to it being a boon to trainers. M ith the ordinary shoe, a horse’s frog is naturolly lifted from the ground, and with nothing to stop the jar, the possibility of joint or ligament trouble is ever present. Mr. Downie, the inventor, has overcome the difficulty by taking plasticine impressions of the frogs of several horses, and from these moulds are taken. A spongy rubber fits into the frog, and the heel and toe rubber is hard and medium. A couple of aluminium rivets hold the rubber in position, and a shoe goes over the rubber in the ordinary way. The result is an artificial frog, which is productive of natural pressure, and an even distribution of weight. The pad for a working shoe weighs about 4joz.. and for a racing plate, ljoz. With the possibility of jar minimised, there is no doubt the artificial frog must prolong the racing usefulness of a horse. Veterinary comment says the latest invention reduces the strain on ligaments and tendons, and what is very much to the point is the fact that the artificial frog has been tried in work and races by wellknown trainers, with satisfactory results. Vaals was fitted with Mr. Downie’s invention when he won at Randwick, as were Comanche and Golden Voice, and the latter had been out of the winning list for a very long time, Biaircourt, Giorgio, and the unregistered performers, Prince of Orange and Cyroma, have also benefited from the use of the artificial frog.

The Auckland Racing Club Is at present carrying out tests with the Henry patent barrier, and it is on the cards the machine may be adopted for use at Ellerslie. The barrier is the invention of Mr. T. Henry, mechanician in charge of the electric totalisator at Ellerslie, and in the tests, has worked very satisfactorily. It is a simple contrivance, that requires less gear than other barriers, and is worked by a hand lever. At the release of the lever, the tapes fly awav rapidly out of reach of the horses. The danger of only one side of the barrier working is eliminated in this barrier, and that is an important point. Further trials will be carried out in the near future, and a definite decision about the use of the barrier will then be made.

Writing of the sire of the New Zealand Derby winner, Nightmarch, a Sydney exchange says: “Sydney racegoers need no introduction to Night Raid, as he was imported to New South Wales by P. Keith, in whose colours he won a division of a Maiden Handicap, at Canterbury Park. Subsequently, he was sold to Mr. A. P. Wade, but he was a disappointing horse, and the only race he won for that owner was Tattersail’s Chelmsford Handicap. Mr. Wade sold him in 1924, and the horse found his way to New Zealand, where he wns retired to the stud the same year. The first crop of Night Raid’s foals, which made their debut on the racecourse last season, won only £385 between them, but one of their number in Nightmarch, has soared to Derby heights, and his success will give a fillip to the demand for the stock of his sire. Like the Victoria Derby winner, and Melbourne Cup runner-up, Strephon, the New Zealand Derby winner is out of a Martian mare." TE KUITI MEETING Dominion Special Service. Auckland, November 23. There were few outstanding gallops at Ellerslie on Thursday, but Gold Money, Golden Wedding, and Corinax were all responsible for attractive efforts, and they aro a very fit trio. Brampton, Pekatahi, Bombarder, The Thorn, The Lover, and Abbot’s Delight were sent to Te Kuiti yesterday, and with Monetize and Bulolo, who went earlier in the week, they complete the Ellerslie contingent for the meeting. The weather seems settled, and a successful fixture should result to-day with big fields. In the hack events there may be some surprises, but the following are sure to be well fancied for the various events; — Hurdles. —Stormy and Tinopono. Awakino Hack Handicap.—Bombarder and Frothblower. Maiden. —Monetize and Sports King. Te Kuiti Cup.—Transformer and Schorr. Te Kumi Hack Handicap.—Hakanoa and Ripon Abbey.
