FROM FAR AND NEAR Murder in Sofia.— While M. Peleff, ex -chief of the Bulgarian Police, was in a shop in Sofia, two unknowp men entered and fired revolvers at him, escaping into the darkness. Canada and British Preference.—An Australian Press Association-United Service message from Ottawa states .that the Minister of National Revenue, Mr. W. D. Euler, announced ou Wednesday that after February 15 goods entering Canada under British preferential rates must be 50 per cent. Empire materials and labour. The present percentage required is 25. The change, he hoped, would stimulate production within the Empire. A corresponding provision is made in regard to imports under the intermediate tariff under special treaties and conventions. Metropolitan Police—A British Official Wireless- message states that Mr. Trevor Bigham, Assistant-Commis-sioner of Metropolitan Police, will in future assume control of the Criminal Investigation Department, in place of Sir Wyndham Childs, who resigned recently. Mr. Nonuiui Kendal, DeputyCommissioner, will take over the duties hitherto performed by Mr-. Bigham. The latter has for a long time made a close study of criminal investigation work. Arson Charge Dropped.— ln the Supreme Court nt Gisborne, the Crown Prosecutor announced that George Campbell would not be required to stand a third trial on the charge of arson. Two juries had disagreed, and the Solicitor-General had Ordered a. stay of proceedings. The accused was discharged.—Press Assn. Rye Harbour Fund.— An Australian Press Association-United Service message from Loudon states that the Rye Harbour Fund to relieve the dependants of the lost lifeboatmen has been closed with a total of £29.000. Sir Oswald Mosley’s Estate.—The late Sir Oswald Mosley left £5764. (states an Australian Press Association message.from Loudon). He bequeathed £2OOO in trusts, and the residue to his housekeeper for her faithful service for sixteen years. The will does not mention his son Oswald, who is a Labour M.P. Fire Near Sydney.—A fire at Church Point. Pittwater, ou the coast of North Sydney, destroyed a general store, post office, refreshment rooms, bank, garage, and several cars, a launch and forty boats. New British Bank Notes.—A British Official Wireless message states that notes of a value of £1 and 10s., printed in many'colours and embellished with the figures of Britannia and, in the : case of larger denomination, of St. George and the Dragon, will take the place of Treasury notes of these denominations now in circulation. The new notes are being issued by the Bank of England, and their design is based on that of existing Bank of England notes.
