TRANSPORTATION PAGEANT

* ANCIENT AND MODERN MODES TO-MORROW’S PROCESSION To-morrow the public of Wellington will have a novelty entertainment provided for them by the committee supporting the candidature of “Queen Cleopatra.” A transportation pageant, featuring ancient and modern modes of transport, will proceed from Waterloo Quay through the main streets to Newtown Park, where a novelty entertainment will be staged. .“Cleopatra” and her maids-of-honour in a Nile barge will be a special feature of the procession, which assembles at 1.30 p.m. ' The Railways Department is to stage a special display, which will include primitive and modern features of railway transport, and that display alone will comprise ten vehicles. The Wellington Motor Traders’ Association will display early model cars, which were designed for mobility rather than comfort, in contrast with the latest de luxe models. The City Council display will include motor vehicles and prize horses. The Master Carriers’ Association’s section will comprise advertising displays by business firms. The Free Ambulance will have a display, as also will the Fire Brigade, St. John Ambulance, and numerous other organisations. Several bands, the Artillery, Mounted Rifles, Army Service Corps, Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts, and Ixion Motor Cycle Club, will also be taking part. It. is stated that the pageant will be staged on a greater and more spectacular scale than ever before attempted in the Dominion, and will comprise some 150 to 200 vehicles. The procession will cover probably a mile to a mile and a half in length. Special precautions are being made to control the crowds which are expected to assemble to view the procession, and follow it to Newtown Park. Tram traffic will be diverted as far as practicable from the route of the. procession, and the Police Department is making special arrangements to regulate traffic. Between 11 a.m. and 12 uOon, aeroplanes will circle the city and suburbs, dropping pamphlets numbered consecutively from Ito 20.00(1. The public are requested- to collect these as a prize is being awarded to each person returning to the Cariiival Office pamphlets numbered 1000, 2000, and each successive thousands up to 20,000.
