THEFTS OF MOTORCARS
PENALTIES HELD TO BE INADEQUATE Dominion Special Service. Auckland, November 22. The penalties imposed on motor-car thieves by Magistrates do not find favour in many quarters. Mr. C. W. Hutchinson, secretary of the Auckland Automobile Association, considers that the punishment is often too lenient. Mr. Hutchinson quotes the case of a man caught stealing a ear red-handed, and whose case was adjourned by the Court for two years on the payment of small costs. “We sent the facts to the Minister of Justice,” said Mr. Hutchinson, “and he agreed that it did not seem quite right.”
Every month sees thefts of numerous cars in Auckland, and many interested agree with Mr. Hutchinson that heavy penalties are needed.
