THE RACING WORLD

OTAKI MEETING CONCLUDED AVRO AND CALLANMORE WIN (By "The Watcher.”) Under ideal conditions the Otaki Maori Racing Club concluded its spring 'meeting yesterday, and it proved that the change from the September dates to November is a great success. Despite the fact that neither day was a Saturday, as was usual in the past, there was an increase in totalisator returns and altogether the club has reason to be well satisfied.

In each of the principal races yesterday the fields were of one dividend proportions, but they provided interesting contests, as was the case in all the other events. Avro narrowly defeated Vertigern in the Teone Makitonore Memorial Stakes, with Black Mint third, and in the Rekereke Handicap Callanmore won from Moutoa Treasury and Helotis. Mr. A. Vincent, continued his good dispatches at the barrier, and the meeting. in all respects was capable managed, the work of the totalisator staff again meriting praise. The. sum of £13.851.105. went through the machine, as compared with £13,753 10s. last year, an increase of £9B. The total for the two days was £28.621, compared with £26,655 last year, an increase of £1966. PUKETOI HURDLES.

Novar made light of his rise of 121 b. in the -hurdles and won more easily than on the first day! • Grand National, Olympic and Diana’s Lad led for half a mile, when Red Bank took charge. Novar went up to second place down the back, and waiting till nearing the straight, then went past the leader and won by six lengths, Red Bank defeating Diana’s Lad by two lengths. Lady Gay came with a late run to within half a length of Diana’s Lad, and the bunch

was well away, headed by Grand National Panorama, and Horomea. Novar stripped an improved horse and made hacks of his opponents. Red Bank ran better than on the first day, but Grand National failed to produce as good a race. Diana's Lad was fair, but had no chance, nor did any of the others. Horomea’s showing was moderTRIAL PLATE. Richfield started a solid favourite for the maiden race, and scored in undeniable style after a rather slow beginning. From the start Wet Winter and Arikinui led to the turn from Baskier, Shot . .ilk, Moutoa Fume, Wyeford, and Richfield. Moutoa Fume then dropped back, causing Wyeford and Richfield to lose a bit of ground, and Baskier further up was also badly interfered with. Arikinui led into the straight, where Richfield made a fast run, and coining on well won decisively by two lengths from Arikinui, who beat Baskier by four lengths. - Wyeford was fourth, and then Shot Silk, Moutoa Fume, and Kiriana. It was a good thing for the winner, who is a smart four-year-old by Acre from Pergola. The second horse, Arikinui, is also promising. He is a well-bred three-year-old by Chief Ruler from Celmisia, and this was his first start. Baskier might have been second but for interference, and Wyeford finished well, but none of the others had any chance. OTAKI HANDICAP. Discourse again tailed off in the Otaki Handicap, but through the smaller field she got a better run, and in the finish scored well. She was a good favourite. Holus Bolus began best from the inner and led to the turn from Shining Star, Rameses, Rory Mor, Acred, and Moutoa Wonder. They closed up entering the straight, and Holus Bolus soon lost his place. Rotowhero and Discourse then moved forward, and Discourse, all out, won by half a length, Rotowhero being a length and a half ahead of Acred. Rory Mor was fourth, and then Moutoa Wonder and Holus Bolus. The honours of the race were with the winner, for she conceded weight and also a start. Rotowhero ran nearer his Wellington form, and Acred improved, but Rory Mor ran as if the race the previous day had left its effects —a happening not unexpected. The others had ev4ry chance and failed. TEONE MAKITONORE MEMORIAL. Only six started in the principal handicap, and with two of them bracketed backers had to pick it in one. The majority plumped solidly for Vertigern. They 'got a great run for their mpney, but he just failed to catch the more-seasoned Avro, losing by half a head. Avro and Imperial Spark made the running all the way from Vertigern, Royal Game, Shining Armour, and Black Mint. When the top of the straight was reached Avro shot away and Vertigern set up a stern chase. Gradually drawing up he was finishing over Avro at the post, but just failed to get up. Black Mint got third money a couple of lengths away, with Imperial Spark, Royal Game, and Shining Armour following in that order. Vertigern was just short of the necessary gallop. He finished like a good horse, and with the apprentice allowance on Avro he was conceding just a pound short of two stone. Scratchings were: Tanagra (11.10 a.m.). Paitonui (11.25 a.m.), Kilmezzo (11.40 a.m.), Kilperon 11.56 a.m.), and Royal Mint (12.35 p.m.). ' PUKEKARAKA HANDICAP. A solid favourite in Veronese came home well in the hack sprint, improving on first day’s form. Quantum began fast from the outer, and was joined by Second Thought, and they made the pace from Australis, Argue, Rash, and Veronese. Veronese waited till the straight was reached, and then came on to win by nearly a length, a length separating Australis, from Quantum. Argue, Green Field, and Thrift were well up. Veronese was too good for this field. Australis is improving, and Quantum lacks a little bit of racing. Argue again ran consistently, and Thrift came well over the last bit. REKEREKE HANDICAP A five-horse field saddled up in the open sprint, and again the favourite (Moutoa Treasury), got beaten. Helotis and Callanmore began best with Moutoa Treasury .a bit slow away. She ran up behind Helotis, and alongside Callanmore at the end of a furlong, and this was the order of the straight. Royal Duke and Keddar whipping in. Once in line, Callanmore forged through on the rails, and won comfortably by three parts of a length from Moutoa Treasury, who beat Helotis by half a length. Keddar was fourth, and Royal Duke last. Callanmore won fairly comfortably, and was. well handled by his young apprentice, K. Voitre. Keddar never threatened to get up. Scratchings were, Ridgemount (2 p.m.), and Kilbroneyth ■ (2.20 p.m.). RAHUI HANDICAP. Metellus carried the major portion of the pool in the half-mile, but he did not strip so well as his trainer could have wished. All the same, he ran a good race, and with a bit of luck might have won. Borsalene and Airtight made the pace from Bourse and Skyrider, and Metellus next. This was the order to the straight, where Borsalene and Bourse sorted themselves out, followed by MetelIps. Under the whip, Bourse hung on, and beat Metellus by half a length, Borsalene weakening, to run third, a couple of lengths away. Kalos was right up, fourth, and the bunch was further back, headed by Home Made and Bissac. Bourse got a nice run, and won cleverly, but had nothing to spare from Metellus.'' Borsalene is improving, and Kalos again rnn a sound race. Airtight faded out at the entrance to the straight, and none of the others was dangerous. King Quex got a very bad passage. ' ' WAIRONGOMAI HANDICAP. In the concluding event, most support came for Kilperon and Maui, but both were well beaten, and Huikai won decisively. When well settled down, Paul Lucerne and Deluge led from Vigilance, Monoghan, Maui, Kilperon, and Huikai. Monoghan went up fast, leaving the back stretch, and had taken the lead round the turn. Entering the straight, the rear division closed up, and Vigilance was in front until Huikai challenged. The latter came on .and won by threequarters of a length, Vigilance beating Decoy Bird, who came on the inner, by a heid. Kilperon was fourth, then Maui and Monoghan. Huikai won very nicely. Vigilance was always handy, and considering she started a good favourite the first day, her backers got a great return for second money. Decoy Bird might have got second had he got a clear run up the straight. Bonhomme ran much below his first day’s form, while Kilperon and Maui had every chance. Monoghan shaped like an improver.

RICCARTON NOTES SOUTH CANTERBURY MEETING Dominion Special Service. Clirjsfcliiirch, November 22. Mullers were uiiunuiilly quiet at Iliccarlon Ibis morning owing to a large contingent of boraca being entrained for Timaru. I’. V. Manon again bad bis team working the reverse way on the plough. ' In all probability the horses mimed will eornprlMi Ihe stable’s team for the Auckland summer meeting. Iloylake was given a j, even-furlong tusk, executed in Imiil. 35sec. Grown Aren and Court Jester were assiiciated in n useful-gallop on the [dough. The former will not be produced at Washdyke to-morrow. Nighlmnreh and' Sir Roy sprinted home smartly from the six-furlong post in 50 4-ssec. Ked Heckle; wifli his trainer up, was given a couple of solid rounds the reverse wny on the plough. This promising galloper figures in the list for the Great Northern Derby, and present intentions are to continue his engagement. lie has shown an indication of mastering a journey, and with a somewhat weak field he has a chance of rewarding If. Christmas with his second successive victory in the classic. Red Heckle will be accompanied north by Zeuxis, who will compete in minor events. , .... , Chide has had to be eased in his work owing to suffering from the • accident he sustained in a paddock prior to the New Zealand Cup meeting, and this is likely to seriously interfere with his preparation for tlie Great Northern Derby, for which it was intended to send him north.

His stable mate, Starshooter, also appears in the Derby list, but he is likewise under a cloud, and as matters at present stand there is a probability that G. Murray Aynsley will not have a. representative in the classic,. .'. The South Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting will open on the Washdyke racecourse to-morrow. In the Otaio Htlrdles Bonatic, Troilus and Carinthia arc likely to command most attention. Amourette, Page Hoy and Belcaire comprise a:likely trio to dispute favouritism in the Spring Stakes. The principal event, the Teschemaker Handicap, will likely be a tussle between First Sight and Battle Colours. The winding track may not favour the former, but Battle Colours has had two victories to his credit on the course and he may be seen to better ndvan2The Tea Girl-Red Jazz bracket will probably be better supported than First Raid in the Tycho Hack Handicap. In the absence of Crown Area, Malmsey, Quarterdeck and Rascal will probably be in most favour for the President s Handicap. „ , Uproar. Singer and Full Flight have chances in the Maiden Plate.. Favouritism in the Kerrytown Hack Handicap may be contested between Zeuxist Tardy and Impertinence. . In the concluding event, the Flying Handicap, Gay Sonnet may find Money Order the only dangerous opponent. FIXTURES. Nor 23, 24—South Canterbury J.C. Nov. 24, 2G-Te Kuiti K.C. • Nov. 30, Dee. The fields are practically the same ill each, but one race is of two mites so that form in one may not prove altogether reliable in the other. Cairnvale did not race during the 192728 season, and so far has had only one race this term. That was in the Drayton Trot Handicap at Methven. Great Way had two outings last year, white this year he has started three times. On Saturday at Otahuhu he finished fourth in the Introductory Handicap, but there was not a great deal of merit in his performance. He is bred the right way, and may be expected to do blitter when he has had more experTencc. Kyra raced four times last year, being second to Helen McGregor at Winton in December, going 3.51 4-5, while later in the season she finished third to Exotic and Dummy Bingen at Wyndham, running 13 furlongs in 4.7. ->i.- ‘ Victor Bingen is a four-year-old, and has already shown a fair amount of promise. At Forbury in Mi;y, in heavy going. he ran third to ■ Hawkesbury Pride and Repute, white at Methven last month he was second to Accumulator in a race of two mites, his time being 5.2 1-5. To’t Logan’s record last season was seven unplaced performances.' She is a young mare and may yet make good. Black Palm has speed, but is very erratic. He had only five races last season, finishing third in one. That wgs at the Manawatu meeting, where he is reported to have registered 3.51 3-5 from a 3.46 mark. Nancy Bingen did not race during 1927-28, but this season has earned stake money on four occasions out of seven attempts. At New Brighton she ran second to New Metford, going 3.49. Last month at Greymouth she ran third to Kereta and Nelson Parrish in the Petrie Handicap and second to Repute in the Royal Oak Handicap when in receipt of 36 yards from the latter. The following day she was again third in the Gieseking Handicap. Kitty Patch was only three times outside the money last season out of eleven starts. At Oamaru in October she ran third over a mile and a half in 3.51 4-5. All her other placed performances were registered on the Wes*- Coast. Her best times were as follow: —10$ furlongs, 3.16 2-5; 12$ furlongs, 3.52 4-5; 164 furlongs, 5.9 1-5. This season she* has so far failed to run into a place in four essays. Hardy Grattan has no form to his credit, either last year or this. Lonesome ran third at Grevmouth, in October. 1927, covering 104 furlongs in 3.19 4-5. while in Mav of the current year, she was second to Nelson Prince, in the Innovation Handicap, at Oamaru, the going being good, and her time being 3.41 3-5. This season she has been placed in both races that she has contested. At Auckland, last month, she followed Etta Cole and Gold ,8ove ; reign home, the first day, and defeated all but the former on the second day. Miss Leda, like Hardy Grattan, did nothing last season. She has not raced so far this year. Having disposed of the straightout trotters, I will take the horses in the Sharpe Handicap that have not already been dealt with in other races. Pearl Coronado raced five times unsuccessfully last season,' but up to date has not been produced so far during the current racing year. Bing Boy started nineteen times last season, for one Win and one third. Both these performances were registered over a mile, at New Brighton, in December, his best time being 2.15 1-5. In six outings. lie has earned nothing this season. High Jinks had a busy season last year, but failed to run as consistently as he had done the year before. He registered a second at New Brighton, in December, going 3.28 2-5; a third at Addington. in January, over a mite, and another second at New Brighton, in March. So far this season, he has secured a couple of winning brackets, and a second. His first win was at New Brighton, in September; the other at Grey--mouth. in October, the times registered being 2.17 (mile), and 3.3 1-5 (10$ furlongs). Until he ran second to Rebel, at Wellington last meeting, Granite City hid not been in a place for many months, and now that the tracks are hardening up, he may not stand up to his work. His time over the mite at the last meeting was 2.15 3-s—very fair, seeing that the track was on the slow side. ‘ Brutus commenced the current season promisingly by running seedlid to Sahib nt Addington, in August, but in bis next three starts he was unplaced. In his last outing, at Oamaru, last month, he finished third to Event and Liidy Matclilight. his time being returned as 2.13 4-5, but I rather think these figures are wrong. Acre won three races during the 1927 season, and was four times third. His successes were registered at Greymouth and Addington (2), while, on the latter

course, he also got three thirds. This season he has also displayed a liking for Addington, as he won there earlier in the month, covering 2 miles in 4.30. Hutt Park Trial. I shall only refer to the horses that have some placed performances to their credit, an exception being made in the case of Hinkler, who ran fourth in the Great Northern Derby, on which form he is likely to be in strong demand on Saturday. Chrystal has had two races, finishing third in the first one. This was at Northlands, when lie went 3.30. • El Direct ran third at Hawke's Bay, in June, time, 3.48 2-5. In the Novice Handicap here, in September, lie was finish-, ing on strongly, and the extra two furlongs this time should be in his favour. Drift Wave registered two thirds at Nelson, last January, while at the last meeting here, she defeated all but Rollo. She was extremely smart off the mark, but was stopping over the last furlong. Her best time at 14 miles is 3.35. Baron Bingen was awarded a race, at New Brighton last season, after finishing second to. Free Advice. He has done nothing since, but if breeding goes for anything, lie should do well, as lie is a full brother to Great Bingen and Co. Harold Lee has one second'to his credit out of eleven starts last year and this. This, he registered at Wyndham, in March, when be went 3.39 1-5. Lightfoot won one race last season, and was placed in four others, white this season he has one second to his credit out of a couple of starts. Winning brackets were secured at Greymouth, in January, when he did the mile and a half in 3.41. At Banks Peninsula recently, he was second to Bonnie Prince, in the second division of the Little River Trot, the winner's time being 3.31 4-5. Lightfoot, in receipt of 12 yards, was three lengths away, so his time would probably be a little better than 3.34. Great Delight’s form wns reviewed yesterday, under the Middle Class Handicap. REHANDICAPS FOR WELLINGTON. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, November 22. Dillon Huon has been re-bandicappcd for the Wellington trotting meeting, to S 4 yards, jn the November Handicap, and to 48 yards in the Sharpe Handicap.
