OBJECTION TO SUNDAY ENTERTAINMENT

MAORI HAKAS AND POIS AT DUNEDIN Dominion Special Service. Dunedin, November 21. On Sunday last a party of Maoris gave an exhibition of poi dances and hakas at Quarantine Island for the purpose of entertaining the members of the Byrd Expedition in charge of the dog teams, and also members of the general public. The matter was introduced at the Otago and Southland Methodist Synod to-day, when a resolution was carried expressing strong disapproval of the entertainment, and concluding: “This synod considers that it is unworthy of the pakehas to thus commercialise the Maoris bn the Lord’s Day, and it calls the attention of the Government Department controlling the island to this grave desecration of Sunday, and requests that permission should not be again granted.” The mover said that such a thing was not even permitted at Rotorua, and if it were allowed to go on without protest the time would come when Maoris would be brought into the city for the entertainment of people on the beaches. “We should make our protest as strong as we can,” said the chairman (the Rev. H. E. Bellhouse).
