THE RACING WORLD

FIRST DAY OF OTAhI SPRING MEETING TALISKER WINS LING MEMORIAL WAITAWA HANDICAP TO KEDDAR Beautiful weather favoured the opening day of the Otaki Maori Racing Club's spring meeting yesterday. Talisker, who won the Levin Cup last Saturday, comfortably won the principal handicap, and the chief sprint event went to Keddar. The totalisator investments showed an increase over those of last year.

(By “The Watcher.”)

The Otukl Maori Racing Club's spring meeting opened yesterday under ideal we#, tiler conditions, mid considering the tact that favourites did not do over-well the totalisator Increase shown at the end of the day was very satisfactory. Scratchings considerably weakened the field in - the principal Handicap, which was won very comfortably by Mrs. Elgar's Talisker. who last Saturday scored very similarly in the Levin Cup. Avro was second and Shining Armour third. With Ridgeuiount out ol’ the open sprint backers went solidly for Callaumore. bid Keddar won very decisively in the finish from Kilbronsytli and llelotis. In the other open event Joy- Hird, having Iter first race of the season, scored u stylish victory. The track was in great order and the racing good. Despite large and unwieldy tields Mr. A. Vincent did very good work at tiib barrier, his day's work being a feature. /The sum o£ £14.769 IDs, was pul through on the eight races, an increase of £lB6B on last year’s first day total of £12,901 IQs, held on a Friday. KA PIT! HURDLES. ■ Rash, a rank outsider, endeavoured to win all the way in the hurdles and bad a big break at the end of a mile. Here Novar went up with Diana’s Lad and Novar had the leader beaten before the last fence, coining on to win by three lengths, while Grand National got within three-quarters of a length of Hash. Red Bank was a couple of lengths back fourth well elear. of the bunch which was headed by Diana’s Lad. Ripdale and Panorama. Horomea lost her jockey at the last fence. Novar won very comfortably, and proved superior class, though Hash would have made it harder lead he been used a little less. Grand National is improving, and might soon win an event of tins description. Red Bank ran a fair race, and Horomea was well up after a good run. when she made a blunder at the last fence and lost her jockey. She did not fail. Kilia was never in the picture, and none of the others .was ever dangerous. MAIDEN PLATE. Chief Singer, drawn No. 1 in the Puhi Maiden Plate, and made a red-hot favourite, scored without effort. She began well, and led with Kentish Lady from Shot Silk, Cloyne, Star Girl. Chopin, and Moutoa Fume. When the straight was readied Chief Singer strode away and won by two lengths from Cloyne. who beat Ciiopiu by a similar margin. Shot Silk was fourth, and then came Kentish Lady, Greenfield, and Moutoa Fume..... Chief Singer outclassed the opposition, and was never in danger of defeat. Cloyne, Chopin, and Shot Silk ran fair races, but never held a winning chance. Shot Silk drew the outer of the field ot 21, otherwise she might possibly have been able to finish closer than fourth. KATIHIKU HANDICAP. Maui surprised in the Katihiku Handicap, but Koyal Acre’s forward running was more unexpected. Maui won nicely as the race was run, but the favourite, Kory Mor, was very unlucky, and so wore Discourse and Topere. Maui began best, but was soon supplanted by Koyal Acre and Green Acre. Green Acre took charge to the turn from Borsaiine, Airtight, Koyal Acre, King Quex, Elysianor, and Maul, the last three being Kory Mor, Discourse, and Topere. King Quex dropped out very quickly on the turn, and once in line Green Acre gave way to Maui, who came on and beat Royal Acre by two lengths. Discourse, finishlug fast, ran Koyal Acre to half a length, and Topere was fourth, followed by Elysianor, Itory Mor, Acred, and Green Acre. 4 Rory Mor made his run so wide out on the turn into the straight that his chance, never too good from the position he came from, was completely extinguished, lie was undoubtedly very unlucky. Discourse also came from well back, but her rider brought her through cleverly enough to just miss second money. Discourse will not be long. Topere was also unlucky. Coming from the back, his rider steered into a lot of trouble on the turn. Koyal Acre will be improved by the race. Elysianor had every chance, aud so did Green Acre. Borsaline was looking likely. for a long way, and improved on her Levin' form. King Quex disappeared on the turn. He was last away, and then up very early. Pale Star was never dangerous. LING MEMORIAL STAKES. Talisker, on whom the stable solely relied, started a red-hot favourite for tho principal handicap. Handily placed in behind the leaders. Kilperou and Avro, all the way he strode home In the straight and won very easily. When settled down Avro and Kilperou led from Talisker and Black Mint. Kilperou went out clear down the back, but oil the turn Avro went up again. Into the straight Avro led from Kilperon, Talisker nnd Black Mint, with Shining Armour and Royal Mint moving up. Once in line Talisker came on and won comfortably by two lengths from AvYo, who beat Shining Armour by half a length. Royal Mint was a neck : further back, and then came Blank Mint, ! Kilmezzo and Kilperon. It was a good tiling for Talisker, who | won just as easily as he did nt Levin. The ■ field, of course, with the scratchings was I of very moderate strength, but Talisker I at present Is in good form. Avro had every chance, and although he ran second he really did not improve much on his '• Levin form. Black Mint was sore, and 1

although be ran a fair race lie could not do anv better when called on tor an etiort. Royal" Mint finished on but was too far back to have a ehauee. Scratchings were Blimp (2 p.m. on Monday), I*ollooll (10.-Io a.m.). Vertigern (11.26 a.m.). Kilmiss (11.50 a.m.), and Royal Game (12.00 p.m.). PAIUKO HANDICAP. Ladv Quex. drawn 15 ill the big field in tlie hack sprint and not at all lancied. was in front ut the end of a furlong and lield her place to win meritoriously. Io tlie turn she was attended by The Dove from Argue, Raineses. Richfield, and Mouton Wonder. Lady Quex came ou to win by two lengths from Argue, who was n neck in front of Kameses. Richfield and Holus Bolus were necks away clear of the bunch, which wus headed by Argue. ' Rameses ran a good race, but Veronese was never sighted. This pair carried the bulk of the money. Richfield carried a fair amount of money and ran creditably. The unlucky runner was Holus Bolus.

WAITAWA HANDICAP. Keddar lay well back in the early stages of the open sprint, but once he made his run he cleaned up his field, llelotis began best and was soon clear, the bunch being beaded by Royal Duke, Dobbin aud Arch Arrow, Kilbronsytli mid Cnllanmore next. They closed on llelotis at. the top of (lie straight, where Keddar came through and went on to win by three-quarters of a length from Kilbronsytli, who got up to snatch second from llelotis on the post by a short head. Callaumore was fourth and then came Koyal Duke and Dobbin. Keddar’s performance was smart and convincing. Kilbronsytli is Just about ready and llelotis ran on better than she has done'lately. Callaumore did not get too good a run on Hie turn. Scratchings were Arrow Boy (11 a.m.), Ridgeuiount (12.5 p.m.), Bonogne (1.35 p.m.), and Huikai (2.30 p.m.). TAL'MANL'KA HANDICAP. Home Made proved a false favourite in the hack distance event, but he was not too lucky. Teheka was first out but was then taken in behind Tanagra, Lady Aluphen, and Gasnapper, the favourite being one of the last to leave the straight. Tanagra went out clear at Hie half, die order of tlie others being much the same, with Billion and Skyrider also prominent. From the top of the straight Teheka came through and won by a good length from Skyrider, who beat Metolius by a long head. Gasnapper was fourth with Kalos. Bissac aud Home Made well up. Teheka responded well to the vigorous riding of R. 8. Bagby and scored nicely. He is in the Great Northern Derby. Plainly his form on Saturday at Levin was all wrong. Tanagra was asked a lot out iu front under his weight nnd failed to run on. Homo Made got a bud run throughout and was finishing stronger than anything when too late. Metolius was another to get a bad passage. His form was a distinct advance on anything he lias shown to date mid this well-bred three-year-old now looks like coming good. Skyrider, Gasnapper, Kalos and Bissac ran creditable races. KEREIHI KOERA HANDICAP. Joy Bird scored a neat win in the concluding event aud considering it was her first appearance for several mouths she came in bright and well. She only just won but tn a style that was a tribute to her trainer, while the judgment of L. G. Morris in the saddle was excellent. The Epistle-Vigilance bracket was favourite from Bonogne. Modern and Deluge led to the turn from Vigilance, Hulkai, and Joy ißird. The latter was going well and when straightened up, she challenged Modern. Then Bonhomme came with a rattle on the rails and in a close finish Joy Bird just lasted long enough to bent bls late run by a head. Modern another head away (bird. Huikai was fourth, and then came Vigilance, Royal Game and Decoy Bird. With as good a run as the winner received the backers of Bonhomme would have handled a royal dividend and even for second he paid more than the winner. Another fresh mare in Modern also ran a great race and went close to winning. Bonogne was never sighted, but Huikai ran a fair race.
