PACIFIC SERVICE

NEW AMERICAN LINERS TO BE BUILT

FOR AUSTRALIAN RUN

SUSTAINED SPEED OF 20 KNOTS (United Progs Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) San Francisco, November 18. The vice-president, Mr. Dierck, of the Matson Line, has announced plans for the replacement of the Sierra, Sonoma, and Ventura in the Pacific service. The designs for new Australian liners have been approved by the Navy Department and the Shipping Board, and bids will be called for shortly. The vessels will rate in Class 2 under the Jones-White Bill, and will be capable of a sustained sea speed of 20 knots. It is expected that the vessels will cost in the neighbourhood of thirteen million dollars and a substantial loan at low interest will be made by the Shipping Board out of the 250 million dollar loan fund credit by the JonesWhite Act. “The liners,” said Mr. Dierck, “will mark the first step of our company to revive the American merchant marine in the Pacific with Government aid under the new law.”
