USE OF BALLENY ISLANDS SANCTIONED Dominion Special Service. Dunedin, November 19. ' A cablegram published on Saturday morning stated that the Imperial Government was prepared to waive its rights to Bouvet Island, the most isolated in the world, being surrounded by 1000 mifes of antarctic sea on all sides. This means that Britain will place no obstacle in the way of annexation of the island by Norway for use as a whaling depot for the Rosshavet Whaling Company. It has since been announced that the New Zealand Government, acting with the consent of the Imperial Government, has granted complete rights to the Balleny Islands to the newly-form-ed New Zealand and Ross Sea Whaling Company. This is a small group of islands in the antarctic on which the Norwegians have cast longing eyes for some time, but the sole occupancy of them is now the privilege of the local company.
