PROFICIENCY CERTIFICATES

RECORD NUMBER LAST SEASON

A report submitted to the council of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association shows that the number of certificates issued to school children during the 1927-28 season for proficiency in swimming, was a record, exceeding the previous season’s total by 2500. The figures for the past three seasons are: 1926, 1481; 1927, 10,458: 1928, 12,958. The year’s total of 12,958 certificates comprised 3069 certificates of merit (22JJ last season), 3752 proficiency certificates (2971 last season), and 6137 learners certificates (51SS last season), distributed among 373 schools. The number of schools represented was a record, the previous best having been 276 last season. The year’s total of certificates brought the number of certificates issued, since the inauguration of the scheme, to 74,623. For the third year in succession, Hawke s Bay headed the list, with 2066 certificates, Wellington being second with 163-. Otago had the greatest number of schools (59), this figure constituting n record for any one centre. The previous record was 58 schools supplied with certificates by Otago, in 1924. The Hawke s Bay.
