ANTARCTIC WHALE FISHERIES
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE Adelaide, November 19. Addressing Rotarians, Mr. C. T. Madigan commented on the economic importance of the Antarctic whale fisheries, which were being exploited by Norwegians. An international agreement was required to prevent the extinction of the whales. The terrific polar winds might some day be harnessed for power. Australia should send another expedition to follow up work done fourteen years ago, and to claim land flagged then, though colonisation might prove a delicate question, since France could claim a bounty on certain lands discovered long ago.
