AMATEUR ATHLETICS

NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING OF DELEGATES The annual meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was held last night, Mr. R. W. Me) illy prethe adoption of the report and balance-sheet, Mr. McVilly commented on the progress made throughout the Dominion during the year, remarking that anything the association could do to assist primary and secondary school sports was in the interests of amateur athletics gene - ‘div. There were now 114 clubs aftihatcd . to‘tile association. He congratulated the j Otago and Canterbury Centres on the progress they had made, a number ot new clubs having been formed in those districts. He hoped that every endeavour would be made to secure a visit ot athletes from the Homeland next season. The value of such visits could not be oieremphasised. . New Zealand was a sporting country, and liked to see the best of her manhood competing against the best from overseas. If it was not possible to

arrange a tour by athletes from England next year, then every endeavour should be made to secure a visit from a Canadian team. , , Refei-'-nce was also made by Mr. mcVillv to the Olympic team. New Zealand’s representatives, in his opinion, lm<l well and worthily represented the Dominion. He congratulated the team as a whole on their successes. His one regret was that it had not been possible to send an eight-oared crew to the Games; their chance, no doubt, would come next time. The future of the association, Mr. McVillv added, was very bright. He could look back to the time when the sport was a dead letter in Wellington. Great strides had been made, and everyone had occasion to be well proud of the present state of affairs. Those interested in amateur athletics, however, could not aftorcl to rest on their oars. And, what vvns more, he was sure they would not. Financially, the association was m a good position. , , . , The report and balance-sheet were the 1929-30 season the New Zealand championships were allotted to Wanganui, the cross-country championship to Wellington, and the New Zealand road cycling championship to Otago.
