Mr. G. Springhall was a passenger from Sydney by the Jlakura yesterday. The late Jlr. Allan Hughes, who died in England recently, was chairman of the Federal Steam Navigation Company, the New Zealand Shipping Company, and the Falmouth Docks Company, also a director of the Jlanchester Ship Canal, and of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand. He left £458,750.

Mr. J. Foley, representative at Auckland for the Canadian National Railways, is on a visit to Wellington. He will probably return to the north this evening. Mr. J. Findlay, New Zealand manager of the Shaw, Savin, and Albion Company, returned to Wellington by the Maltura yesterday morning, after a business visit to Australia. Mr. C. E. Kerr, proprietor of the Timaru “Herald,” returned to Wellington by the Makura yesterday from a seven months’ tour.abroad, which included visits to Great Britain, the Continent of Europe, Java, and Australia. Mr. C. Hellier Evans, inspecting auditor for Messrs. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., in Queensland, is at present on a holiday visit to New Zealand. Mr. Evans is well known in the Dominion, having resided for many years in the Poverty Bay district, where he was prominent in military polo, and cricketing circles. He commanded the East Coast Mounted Rifles for several years, and pro'eeeded to the Great War in 1916 with the rank of major. As horses were too big a target in France, the mounted men were transformed into a cyclists’ battalion, which was commanded with conspicuous success by Major Evans, who finished up the campaign with the rank of lieutenantcolonel. Mr. Evans, who is accompanied by Mrs. Evans, will return to Brisbane by the Tahiti.
