BELLIGERENT FIREMAN
DESERTER FROM SHIP SENT TO GAOL. The belligerent character of Hans Hansen, a fireman, aged 26. who was charged with deserting from the Canadian Conquerer, was described by Mr. T. R. Boyes, local agent for the Canadian Government Merchant Marine.' Ltd;, in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Mr. Boyes said that Hansen had given a lot of trouble on the vessel. When in port be got drunk, and “beat. up”.the other firemen. Just prior to the ship's departure from Wellington Hansen “smashed up” two of them very badly, and the whole crew said that they would not sail with him. lie cleared out five or leu minutes before the ship sailed. Mr. Boyes asked that accused might be detained. and placed on board the Canadian Highlander on November 27. It was mentioned that Hansen was a prohibited immigrant. Accused was sentenced to 21 days’ imprisonment. On a charge of drunkenness he was convicted, and discharged.
