MR. PURCHASE REPLIES TO A CRITIC

Sir, —A letter appearing in your issue, of November 1 over the mime of A. Ja Hosking takes me to task for the attitude I have taken up by contesting the Otaki seat, and in doing so accused me ot being unfair to the Prime Minister, inasmuch as I accused him of utterly failm tt *to carry out promises made, not to an individual as in Mr. Hosking’s case, but in the presence of five persons. Of course, I recognise that Mr. Hosking is entitled to his own opinion’, but would ask buh he is aware what promises tjie, Prime Minister did make seeing that he has not been a in attendance our meetings' since such promises were made. It issurprisingly strange how these dark horses come to light when they are. least expected, and' may-I ,£ay quite in nine with Wellington Central position, as we find it to-day. The remarks I made, referred to by this gentleman, were made, not at a farmers’ conference, but at a dinner, and were made on the strength of the promises mentioned. Therefore, I have nothing to retract. ' . Why is it necessary for Mr. Hosking when attacking myself to drag through the mud the little association which on his own statement has meant so much to him and to which he has contributed so little in return. Why when , more serious positions have arisen has the telephone sufficed instead of the Press? .
