An elderly lady, who was bidding goodbye to a friend at the Elthani railway station, on a recent morning, received a shock to her nerves, through not heeding the warning whistle of the engine of the mail train, as it started out of the station (states the “Argus”)... The lady was deeply absorbed in her friend, when she suddenly became aware that the train was moving. At once she made a leap for the station platform, and on landing, fell over. The stationmaster was close at hand, and lifter her on to her feet. The ladv, in reply to his inquiry, stated that she" was not hurt,- though bruised, and after a few minutes’ rest, recovered from the shock. The incident caused delay, as the train stopped, the driver evidently assuming that the lady was a passenger. An interesting sight was shown to a reporter by a resident of BroXvns the other day (states the “Southland Times”). A little while ago the water supply to a Browns resident gave out and no apparent cause could be found for its failure. The pipes were examined and there, hard and fast, was a lively crayfish. of which only the rear was visible outside the length of piping. Apparently it had swum along the main pipe safely, but had met its Waterloo in the narrow: pipe.
