C.J.C. SPRING MEETING CONTINUED derby won by nightmarch HOYLAKE WINS METROPOLITAN HANDICAP. ROSCREA BREAKS DOWN AND IS DESTROYED; CROWN AREA SOLD •rhe second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club ’ s held yesterday when the principal eve " ts ™ descri bed Derbv and the Metropolitan Handicap. (By Telegraph—Front “The Watcher. )

1 Cliristcliurch, November 5. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting was continued in fine, sultry weather, with a slight breeze from the north-west which made for fast times. Principal events to-day were the Derby Stakes and the Criterion and Metropolitan Handicaps. , , . In the Derbv, Nightmarch scored in a slow-run race, from Cashier and Moorgas. In- this event, Limerick’s half-brother, Koscren, broke down so badly that he had to be destroyed. . Arrow Lad won the Criterion Handicap narrowly from Cimabue and Iteremoana, and in a great finish for the Metropolitan, Hoylake, Mandane, and Battle Colours were separated by heads. Nightinarch, the winner of the Derby, was bred by Mr. G. Kain, at Stirling, the stud being now at Orari. Nightmarch showed fair form as a two-year-old last season, and this season was purchased for 1000 guineas by Mr. A. Louisson, of Christchurch, who formerly raced Winkie’s Best with success. In Mr. Louisson’s colours, Nightmarch has now won three races in succession. He gave his sire, Nightraid, his first Derby starter and winner. There does not appear to be a great deal of merit in the form ot the three-year-olds, and the race is one of the slowest on record. Nightmarch, however, is a good colt, who might, and probably would have, won in any circumSt CThe S end of Roscrea is to be regretted; he'has been more or less a cripple since he became sore in Sydney, and to-day was his finish. He had only gone about half a mile when he collapsed. Karly in the season he showed promise, but it was not fulfilled, and he was not in the same class as his half-brothers, Ballymena and .P’lJackers had a pretty thin time to-day, and the last races saw big dividends. Nevertheless, the public, • who attended in average Derby day numbers, kent wagering pretty consistently, and put through the sum of £40,326, as compared with £43,882 on the second day last year. MIDDLETON HURDLES. Troilus found the shorter distance in the Hurdles more to his liking, and won after being prominent throughout. Ned Kelly and Nine of Spades maue the early running from Bcaumopt.* Down the back Troilus ran up /ind joined Ned. Kelly. Beaumont made a’bad jump at the mile post and lost his place. Ned Kelly and Troilus still led at. the half, but Troilus was clear coining .into the straight from Ned Kelly. Nine of Spades, Apple Dighton and Carinthia. Troilus;. came on to beat Nine of Spades by.,.df length and-11 half, with Ned Kelly!®lßiniilar‘distance back, followed by Carinthia, Apple Dighton, and Beaumont. Beaumont was gone from the time he hit the fence at the mile post. Troilus was a winner all the way, Ned Kelly and Nine of Spades failing to see the journey right out. Bonatic lost his rider at the first fence, and of the others Carinthia and Apple Dighton were the only horses to run at all well. CRITERION HANDICAP. On Stewards’ Handicap running Arrow Ead looked a great wager in the Criterion Handicap, although he had never been further than six furlongs. His form worked out well, but liis winning margin was extremely narrow from the improved Cimabue. Arrow Lad and Cimabue drew I and 2 at the post, and Cimabue began with great brilliance, putting a break of a couple of lengths between himself and the bunch, in which Arrow Lad, Benzora, and Teri were abreast just ahead of Reremoana. The rear was brought up by Celerity 11, who got chopped out at the start. There was no change in the order to the straight, except that Royal Saxon ran up on the outer near the leaders. Once in line, Arrow Lad. challenged Cimabue, and they had a rare battle. A hundred yards off the post Arrow Lad ;had a neck advantage, but Reed shook ’up Cimabue to such an extent that. he had reduced the margin to a nose at . the post. It was the nearest possible thing to a dead heat. Reremoann finished over the beaten lot to get third money, two lengths and a half away, just clear of Celerity 11, Goblin Market -and Kilbronsyth, who finished in a line. Arrow Lad plainly emphasised his bad luck in the Stewards’ Handicap, and bis performance, and. also that of "ICimabue, was brilliant. Cimabue evidently was short of a gallop in Saturday’s race. Reremoana ran a good race, but never held a winning chance and filled the same position in the race as be did Inst year. Celerity II was unlucky nt the start, and but for this it is likely she would have been in the money. None of the others had any chance, but Goblin Market, for whom there was support, and Kilbronsyth, ran fair races. The latter was back with Celerity II in the early stages. Reremoana, Celerity II and Arrow Lad were the favourites. _ Crown Aren was scratched at 11.47 n.m.. having been purchased this morning by J. McCombe. The price is understood to have been 2000gns. IRWELL HANDICAP. With the wind behind them the two-year-olds put up a torrid half-mile in the Irwell Handicap. Nedda, Dutch Money and Francolin were always in front clear of the bunch, and they had the issue to themselves. Nedda stuck on best and won by a length from Dutch Money, who beat Francolin by a similar margin. The bunch were well back, Duellona being fourth, with Stealth, Belcaire and Stately well up, and then Admiral Drake. Nothing ever had a chance with the three Paper Moneys who filled the places, as they began too well. Nedda, who is out of Michaela, had the benefit of a race at Dunedin, whereas it was Dutch Money’s first start. Fancolin hnd every chance, but was beaten with half a furlong to go. NEW ZEALAND DERBY. The eight finalists in the Derby all went to the post, and by general opinion, it was voted one of the poorest fields that has ever contested this classic race, as seven or eight were eligible for hack class. As a race, it was devoid of any excitement. Cashier showed out first, but Nightmarch soon .settled down in front, and led at a cantering pace from Full Feather and Concentrate, with Cashier and Moorgas following. At the seven furlong post, Roscrea pulled up. There was no change in the order to the straight, where Full Feather and Concentrate had had enough. Nightmare!) then came on to win by a long halflength from Cashier, who sprinted home better than the others, and was two in front of Moorcas. Thon camo

Silver Paper, Concentrate, and Full Fe snver Paper, who started a solid favourite, was never in the hunt, and failed badly. There was no fluke about the win of •Nightmarch. He made all the running, and held off all challengers. Any class that pertained to the field was his alone, and he never looked like getting beaten. Roscrea 'was fpund to have badly dislocated a fetlock joint, and lie was destroyed. The first half took 5u 2-ssec., and the pace was only on over the last five furlongs. HAGLEY HANDICAP.

Historic and. Mendip held the stage in the hack nine furlongs, to the exclusion of all the others. Over the business stages they were the only two in.it, and Mendip scored very decisively, by half a length, after Historic had got a much better run throughout. Outride of this pair, Pride made the best showing, and Imarosebud finished fourth, after being last at the half. Malmsey and Amor, who finished next, were also fair, Malmsey getting into a good deal of trouble at the turn. . There can be only one summing up ot this race: Mendip was a good thing. METROPOLITAN HANDICAP.

There was a great finish in the f Metropolitan Handicap, heads separating the first three horses. Battle Colours led all jjie way at a sound pace from Sea Sail, Mandane, Hoylake, and Oratrix, and entering the straight he slightly increased his lead. He was still holding off Mandane and Hoylake, with 100 yards to go, but they closed on him strongly m the final pinch, Hoylake putting in the final dash to snatch a bead victory from Mandane with Battle Colours the same distance away. Pink Note was a couple of lengths back fourth, followed by Oratrix. Set Sail, and Beacon Light. . Hoylake was ridden in behind to-day, and he settled doSvn well. He only 311st won, but it was performance • for the time was' fhst, last half took 47 3-ssec. Mttndane was; f\ot quite. h°rself. yet she ran a great race; .so .did Battle Colours. His performance m 311st failing after making all the running, was excellent, and a good deal better than his form at Trantham. Set Sail flattered for a mile and a quarter. Oratrix, given; every chance by R. Reed. momentarily about a furlong and a half from home, but she then dropped out. Pink Note never looked likely, and Beacon Light ran without any dash. RANDOLPH HANDICAP. There was a big turn-up in .the hack seven furlongs, when Proud Knight won. Never further back than second, he came away in the straight, when the leader (The Atom) retired, . and won comfortably by a length from Impertinence, who beat Honeycomb by a length and a half. Both Impertinence and Honeycomb came from the back, Honeycomb in the early stages being last. Smithereens and Bon Rose, who finished fourth and fifth, were always well up. and so was Pound Note. Camisader and Noteworthy never flattered. ROl de Vai was in the picture turning into the straight, where he fell back well beaten. He was an entirely false favourite. Rabbi was never prominent. EPSOM HANDICAP. There was another big dividend in the concluding event when Solrose squeezed home ahead of King Midas. First Sight, Sir Roy, Prickles, and King Midas carried the money, but Prickles got badly off and Sir Roy was also soon well back. Pangolin showed out early, but Solrose soon reached the front and led from Lucy Locket; Buoyant, Pangolin, and Rotor. King Midas moved up entering the straight, where Solrose was four or five lengths out in front. King Midas caught Solrose twenty; yards off the post, but he was spent with the effort and weakened over the last bit to enable Solrose to win by a hegd. Lucy Locket was three lengths back third, a neck in front of Rotor, who was followed by Buoyant, Pangolin and First Sight.' Solrose showed too much brilliancy for the field, and King Midas was the only one to get to her. He ran a great race. Lucy Locket and Rotor also ran fair races. First Sight was always well back, but finished' strongly in the run home. Prickles lost her chance at the start; she was up fourth on the turn, but then faded back again.

Oranges are expected to be cheaper In the coming winter in Britain than in any year since 1913, owing to the rivalry between the Californian and South African growers. The unemployment evil must, to the extent to which it is subject to regulation, be laid at the door of the Arbitration Court. Under pressure from the unions, the Court has imposed conditions upon industry that operate in a twofold manner against the admission of boys to the training and experience that are. necessary to enable them to become qualified tradesmen. The restrictions upon the engagement of apprentices narrow the avenues of employment, and the wages that are prescribed for beginners are in many instances fixed at such absurdly high amounts as to discourage employment. The regulation of the conditions of employment in industry, has, however, been entrusted to industrial tribunals. Certain broad principles are laid down in the legislation concerning factories and shops and offices, but the details that must be observed in the management of industrial enterprise in all the classes of employment that come wlth- ' in the scope of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act are settled by the appropriate tribunals. How can it be otherwise? If the arbitration law is worth preserving, the institutions that have been established under it should be free from political interference in the dischcarge of the responsibilities remitted to them.—/‘Otago Daily Times.”
