CHORAL COMMUNION AT PRO-CATHEDRAL

Sir, —As a newcomer to your city, may I say how shocked I was at the conduct of the worshippers at the above service, on Sunday last? I was delighted that the service was not unnecessarily prolonged by being preceded by Matins, but after enjoying the beautiful singing and inspiring sermon, the whole effect of the service was spoilt by the exodus of choir boys, and most of the congregation immediately after the Consecration Prayer. Who is responsible for this dreadful innovation, and what possible authority is there for it? There is some excuse for the use in the Old Country, when the Holy Communion service is preceded by Matins, for members of the congregation who have been present at tlie former service to withdraw after the Prayer for the Church Militant, in the Communion Service, as they have already attended one service, and only stay on for the other to hear the sermon, and be present at the presentation of the alms, but for people to flock out in the middle of a single service—and that at the most, sacred moment—-is nothing, short of a scandal, and I do hope those responsible for the services at the pro-Cathedral, which is supposed to set the standard of worship for tlie dipcese, will find some means of allowing those persons who wish to. leave before the’end of the service to do so at some more appropriate time. What I should suggest is that the people be told when the notices are being given■ there is no need for anyone to leave the church, even if they do not wish to communicate at that service, but if anyone does wish to leave, would they kindly do so during the hymn sung after the prayer for the Church Militant. The choir boys should set a good example by remaining with the choir men, and singing softly appropriate hymns, which by the way, should be given on the hymn boards, during the communion of the people. I would also like to suggest that the number of communions made at this service be cut .down to the minimum, so that the service would not be unduly prolonged. 'One could not but notice on Sunday that many of the communicants were sturdy and strong, and well fit to. discipline/their bodies by meeting their Lord at the early celebration, instead of flocking up to the altar after their breakletter is sent in no spirit of carping criticism, but to let those responsible know that their otherwise, beautiful service is spoilt by a cjute uncalled-for custom. —I am, etc., r.

DISAPPOINTED VISITOR. Wellington, October 29.
