RESULT OF NEWFOUNDLAND POLITICAL TURNOVER PURCHASE BY AMERICANS OR CANADIANS “A MATTER OF DOLLARS AND CENTS” (Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) St. Johns, November 2. The sale of Labrador to either a Canadian or a United States syndicate, in the opinion of Sir William Coaker, leader of the Fishermen’s Protective Union and ally of Sir Richard Squires, will be among the results of the Opposition victory in the Newfoundland elections. Sir Richard Squires has made no statement. ‘‘THE TENDENCY OF THE TIMES” OLD FLAG NOT FORGOTTEN (Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) Halifax (Nova Scotia). Nov. 2. The Opposition victory in Newfoundland draws attention to an interview here in July, 1927, iu which Sir William Coaker predicted a victory for the Opposition in tlie next election and also predicted tlie sale of Labrador to American interests. He said that Newfoundland was in no humour to consider confederation with Canada. If tlie day came when it considered its destiny apart from tlie present Constitution, it would be tlie United States they would look to. He said that Newfoundland was coining round to the idea of being a State of the United States. “If a referendum were taken,” he said, “it would be carried in favour of that policy by a 75 per cent. vote, not because Newfoundland lias forgotten the old flag, but. because the tendency' of the times is to consider dollars and cents first. “Newfoundland would never stand by and see the Old Country trampled oil, but when the question to be decided means no injury to the old flag and more dollars aud cents for her people, it is likely that the latter feeling would prevail. The true destitny of Newfoundland. with her fisheries and forests and minerals, lies in the direction of the United States.”
