SINGAPORE NAVAL BASE CONTRACT
AMERICA BENEFITS (Australian Press Assn.—United Service ) London, November 2. Tlie “Daily Express,” in an editorial, states that the British contractors for the Singapore Naval Base have placed £70,000 for a contract for excavators in America. The Admiralty has apparently given out tliat it will be one of the biggest contracts of recent years, and without any stipulation against the use of foreign material, while the contractors will be legally free to purchase their requirements wherever they please. “We should have thought,” says the “Daily Express,” “that the spirit and circumstances of their great task would have weighed as much as the strict letter of the bond, especially in view of Jlr. Baldwin’s recent appeal on behalf of the unemployed.”
