THE RACING WORLD

ORATRIX WINS NEW ZEALAND CUP

WELCOME STAKES TO HONOUR; STEWARDS’ TO SILVERMINE

VRC MEETING OPENS: STREPHON WINS THE DERBY

The attention of followers of racing was directed on Saturday mostly to Riccarton, where the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Metropolitan meeting opened. The New Zealand Cup was won by Oratrix, Rapier and Hoylake filling the places, while the Stewards Handicap went to Silvermine, and Honour scored an impressive win in the Welcome Stakes. The spring meeting of the Victorian Racing Club also opened on Saturday. The principal event was the Victorian Derby, which was won by Strephon; the New Zealander, Prince Humphrey, was injured during the running of the race and finished well back. At the Dargaville meeting, which was held at Auckland, the President’s Handicap was won by Flying Juliet and the Juvenile Handicap by Awamutu.

CJ.C. MEETING ORATRIX’S NEW ZEALAND CUP SILVERMINE WINS STEWARDS’ HANDICAP STRIKING PERFORMANCE IN WELCOME STAKES (By Telegraph- From “The Watcher.”) Christchurch, November 3. Eight years ago, Oratress, then a five-year-old, won the New Zealand Cup, and to-day, her daughter, Oratrix, also a five-year-old, scored in the same big handicap. Both nrares were bred by Mr. S. J. Gibbons, of Marton, but whereas Mr. Gibbons owned Oratress when she won. he sold Oratrix last season to Mr. 11. J. Murphy, of Wellington, in whose colours she won. Mr. Murphy has been in the racing game only two seasons, yet he has, in addition to several successes of lesser note, scored in the New Zealand Cup, one of the most important handicaps on the racing calendar, and one which many owners of several years standing, have endeavoured frequently and unsuccessfully to win. Great credit for the condition of the winner is due to her trainer. 11. B. Lorigan, and to the Trentham track, where she is trained. It adds another big event to its long list of victories from the headquarters of the Wellington Racing Club. Oratrix started racing at three years, when she ran five times for one win, in a maiden handicap race, at Blenheim. Last season, when a four-year-old, she developed good form. She started twenty-two times for five wins and seven places. She gave evidence of stamina when she won the Hagley Handicap, one mile and a furlong, at Riccarton. a year ago, while at the Manawatu summer meeting she won the Grandstand Handicap, one mile and half a furlong, and the Liverpool Handicap, one mile find a furlong. She liad a moderate lot behind her when she won the Pahiatua Cup, and she wound up with a. win at Blenheim. At Riccarton. in the autumn, she was third in the Sockburn Handicap, and with a little luck, she would have done even better. This season, Oratrix went to Sydney, where she ran second to Jocelyn, in the Metropolitan Cup, and was running over the winner at the finish. That performance made her look a really good stayer, and as she carried 7.11 (minimum, 6.7), it became apparent that she was well in at Riccarton, with only a pound over the minimum. The North Island also secured the second leg of the. double, the Stewards’ Handicap, through the agency of the Taranaki-owned and trained gelding, Silvermine. Silvermine put up a brilliant performance, scoring in very fast time, with Childsplay relegated to second place. Riccarton thus had the bad luck to run second in both the Cup and Stewards. The Welcome Stakes saw a striking, and, in a way. an astonishing performance by the winner, Honour. This is the colt for whom Mr. Greenwood, through his trainer. R. J. Mason, gave the record price of 2300 guineas at the last Trentham sales. To-day was his first public appearance, and although he ran as green as grass, he outclassed his field. What he will do when really wound up is a matter for conjecture. It is certain that he is an exceptionally good colt. There was an excellent attendance, but despite the fact that the public were well on the spot in their selections, thetotnlisator business was not so good as it was twelve month ago. At the end of the day £61,919 had been put through, a decrease of £3500 on last year’s total of £65.509. The track was in good order, although not conducive to very fast time. There was rather a startling incident when the placed horses weighed in at the finish of the Stewards’ Handicap. The winner. Silvermine, weighed in at the extreme limit of his overweight allowance, as laid down by the Rules of Racing, and but for the fact that he had declared Alb. over on weighing out. he would have lost the race. Prior to the race, and after weighing out. McCormac states, he had part of a small cup of tea, and nothing to. eat. He weighed in 21b. over, nnd he considers the bulk of the extra weight was due to sweat from the horse being soaked up by a rubber. There was an extremely anxious few minutes before the officials were quite satisfied that the weight was all correct. SPRING HURDLES. Nukumai was beaten' by his weight in the hurdles, after a gallant race. Diana’s Lad and Nine of Sp’ades made the running, Nukumai settling down in the rear. Beaumont and Troilus were behind the leaders down the back, and entering the straight, Diana’s Lad fell back,-Nukumai making a forward move. Beaumont, Troilus, Carinthia, and Nukumai came at the last fence in close order, and once over, Nukumai hit the front, Beaumont, however, made the best run home, and scored by three parts of a length. Carinthia was four lengths back, third, a similar distance in front, of Troilus, and then came Diana's Lad, Nucleus, and Nine ot Spades. Bowden gave the favourite every chance, and rode him skilfully, but Beaumont was too good at a difference of o~lb. Still, Beaumont had to do his best to bout the veteran. None of the others had a winning chance, but Carinthia and Troilus flattered for a mile and threequarters, Nucleus ran a poor race. SPRING PLATE. Originally a field of 25, the Spring Plate dwindled down to 10 runners, and Mendip, the hot favourite, scored very decisively, in the finish. Bon Rose and Teri made the pace solid from the start, and were attended by Cashier, then Lucky Light and Mendip, while Roscrea, Sarnia, and Poetess began slowly. There was practically no change to the straight, where the field closed up. Cashier hit the front two furlongs from home, but Mendip then put in a claim, and went on to win by two lengths, while Sarnia, with a late run, ran Cashier to a neck. Moorgas was a couple of lengths away, fourth, and then came Teri, Lucky Light, and Phillipic. Getting off a bit slower than usual made' Mendip’s win so pronounced, as the pace was so good in front that he had his run left when the straight was reached. Teri was cracked up at the business end, but Cashier ran a good race., Sarnia's race was rather impressive. She came late from well back, with a, stjoug

run, and looks like running well in the Oaks." Roscrea was well hack early, and he hung right off the course on the turn, covering a lot of extra ground. He finished well back, and never looked like getting any money. He pulled up sore, and may not start in the Derby. Moorgns was fair. Mendip has vastly improved, and will win good handicaps later. LINWOOD HANDICAP. The hack race resolved itself at the finish into a contest between two horses, Nightmarch, and Red Heckle, the bunch being well beaten. Silver Rule showed out first, but Denier soon took up the running with her, and the nearest of a strung-out field were Red Heekle. Night•march, and Panther. Denier led into the straight, but quickly collapsed, and Red Heckle took charge. The latter was challenged by Nightmarch, and they drew right away, Nightmarch scoring after a sharp struggle, by half a length. Camisader was five lengths back, third, with Tenbroney fourth, and clear of the bunch, which was headed by Impertinence, Panther, and Desert Lad. Nightmarch, a good-looking three-year-old colt, bv Night Raid, from Marsa, by Martian—Nantes, scored impressively and stayed on well.— He is in the Derby, and looks likely to run a good race on Monday. Red Heckle ran better than expected, as he has not done too well lately. None of the others had any chance at all with the leading pair. Denier only lasted five furlongs, and Silver Rule bled. NEW ZEALAND CUP.

There were no late scratchings for the New Zealand Cup, and twelve went to the post. Right, from the opening of the machine the public showed a pronounced preference for Oratrix and Rapier, and they started solid favourites, Oratrix in particular going out at a short price, and £l2OO better backed than Rapier. There was a big run on Hoylake, and he finished up only £37 behind Rapier. The public judgment was excellent, but Rapier was a good thing beaten. Hoylake attempted to win all the way, and that runner and Beau Gcste were the first to be prominent. Hoylake soon took charge, and passing the stand he was ‘three lengths in front of Beau Geste, with Rotor and Shining Armour next, while three lengths further back were Oratrix, Lucy Locket, Rapier, and Pink Note, Set Sail being last, with Count Cavour in front of her. Hoylake increased his advantage leaving the straight, and passing Cutts's lie had a lead of eight lengths, which had been reduced to six at themile post, where Beau Geste and Shining Armour were next, with Rotor, Oratrix, and Rapier following in that order. Hoylake was four lengths in front at the sixfurlong posi and held the same advantage racing round the home turn and into th straight, where Beau Geste and Oratrix were next, with Rapier closing up. Oratrix beiided Hoylake about a furlong from the post, and was winning comfortably when Rapier came with an electric burst of speed, and ran her to half a length, finishing much the stronger. HoyJake was a length back in third place, and Beau Geste another two lengths away fourth, followed by Pink Note, Rotor. Black Mint, and Shining Armour.' I • Hoylake just failed to see the journey out. Being full of running, and with only 7st. on his back, the tactics of trying to win al! the way were justified, but he lacked the stamina of Oratrix and Rapier. Oratrix lay in a nice position all the way. and got a good run over the last half. She looked certain to be hard to beat, for her finishing run was well timed and strong. Rapier, however, carried off the honours of the race, as he conceded the winner 271 b.. and was. in addition, most unlucky. Just as he started his business run, about three furlongs from home, he got badly knocked. Tn fact, he was nearly down. Even then he finished like a bulldog, and in another few strides he would have won. Seldom does one sec such'a great burst of speed as Rapier showed at the end of the two miles, with Ost. up, and after meeting with had interference. It was a pretty good indication that the opposition was not. class.

Hoylake’s rider is being criticised for his riding, but if the horse had been good enough he would have won. for he was given a breather in the middle stages of the race. Hoylake left the impression that in another two months, say, about Auckland Cup time, he will be more solid and in better form than he wns to-day. He has grown into a very commanding type of horse. Over the last furlong Rapier caught fully five lengths on Oratrix.

There were no surnrisos in the race, with one exception. Benn Geste. This brother of Scion ran very well, and for a lopg way looked one of the most dangerous. In fact, rs they turned for home he looked a possible winner. His fourth was h creditable effort. None of the others looked likely. Pink Note and Rotor failed to stav. while Count Cavour. Beacon Light, ami Set Sail ran without any dash at all. Lucv Locket and Shinin" Armour wore out of their class. Black ■Rlint was always well back, nnd only ran over the beaten lot nt the finish. WELCOME STAKES.

Honour caught the public by surprise when lie won the two-year-old classic, but there was no fluke about his victory. He ran a very green race and looked only half ready, but won very decisively. The plain fact is that he outclassed an even lot in which there was nothing equal to his class. Aspiring, Speed Light, First Money and Francolin began best and led to the straight. Here Aspiring took charge and was challenged by Gold Tinge. A little later Honour came through on the rails and went on to beat Aspiring and Gold Tinge by a length and a half, a head separating the last-named pair. Admiral Drake, -Who began slowly, "was a length back fourth, followed by Stealth, Speed Light and First Money, with Francolin last. Honour Had the race won over a hundred yards from home. Gold Tinge improved on his Trentham running, and he and Aspiring' are good sorts, but not up to Honour's class. Gold Tinge, however, still looks capable of improvement. APPRENTICES’ HANDICAP. The favourite, Rabbi, won the apprentice race, thanks to young Webster’s riding. Had Amor held his good early position he would have Won and, as it was, he finished much stronger than the winner. When Amor lost his place amongst the leaders in the first furlong I he running was carried on by Calamine and Waterlow from Rabbi, Smithereens, Viscount and Quarterdeck. Waterlow was in front entering the straight and Rabbi challenged. He was a safe whines A furlong off the post, but her§ Ab.9£

came with a strong run and Rabbi just got home by a head. Waterlow was a length away third and Calamine a fair fourth. Then came Smithereens, Viscount and Quarterdeck. Amor was decidedly unlucky. Galamine and Waterlow ran fair races but ad every chance. Smithereens ran creditably after failing to jump out cleanly from No. 1. STEWARDS’ HANDICAP. Silvermine won the Stewards’ front end to end. Drawn in No. 1 position, he hit the front with great brilliancy, being attended to the straight by Consent, Childsnlav and Booster, with the bunch handy, the only tailer being Arrow Lad, who got very badly away, losing several lengths. When thev reached the straight, Silvermine anil Childsplay gradually drew away, a fine struggle between the panseeing Silvermine prevail by half a length. Bright Glow finished third, three lengths back just clear of Crown Area, ami then came Booster, Arrow Lad, Consent, Royal Saxon, Royal Tractor, and Cimabue. , . Silvermine and Childsplay showed too much brilliancy for their opponents, and were never in danger of being overhauled. Bright Glow looked and ran well without holding a winning chance. Booster and Cimabue were handy enough to have won if good enough. Consent was prominent early, but was not up to the class. The unlucky runner was Arrow Lad, and on his position at the finish he must have been in the money with a good beginning. Paperchasc was never sighted, and Silver Paper, who drew the outer, was beaten at the three-furlong post. Crown Area could not begin nnd he was well back early, but lie finished with a great run. Over a longer journey he is an early winner. Silver Paper and Bright Glow started substantial favourites. It transpires that Arrow Lad was squeezed at the start and was nearly down. A glance at the horses drawn in the inner will suffice to show what brilliant speed the field had to contend with. The first four marbles were drawn by Silvermine, Cimabue, Childspjay, and Arrow Lad. RICCARTON HANDICAP. First Sight lay well back early in the concluding event, but came on the scene with a strong finishing run, and won very nieely. Gay Sonnet put a break on the field in the first half, and strung them well out, her nearest attendants being Vaward. Sir Roy, nnd Kilperon. At the half-mile Mandane had moved up, and a little later Full Feather became conspicuous. Gay Sonnet was beaten when the straight was reached, leaving Full Feather and Sir Roy in charge from Mandane. First Sight then came through, and after a brief struggle, scored by a good length from Full Feather, with Sir Roy a similar distance .away. Another length back Mandane was just fourth from Battle Colours, Front Rank, and Town Bank, with Royal Game next. First Sight’s performance was firstclass, and he was going away at the finish, after being the last to leave the mark. Full feather put up a fine race, but a good three-year-old would have won. At the same time, it wns quite a respectable Derby trial, considering the moderate way the three-year-olds as a whole have been shaping. Sir Roy was backed and beaten, but he could have been handled to better advantage. Mandane ran a good race, but she is just recovering from season trouble, and this, no doubt, accounts for her failure to run unite up to expectations. She was a hot favourite. Battle Colours ran a greatly improved race on his Wainui .Handicap form, and if he repeats it again, he will win at the meeting. He was " well at the finish, after being back with First Sight early, and meeting with a check nt the six-furlong post.

The following acceptances have been received for the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s spring meeting:—

REVIEW OF THE FIELDS (By Telegraph.—From “The Watcher.”) Christchurch, November 4. With the exception of the Metropolitan Handicap, good acceptances have been received for the second day’s racing. The weather outlook is fine and the track will probably be better than on Saturday so far as times are concerned. Beaumont has 171 b. more to carry m the Hurdles, but the handicap scale is 41b. higher. He looks like running very well again and is a good weight carrier. On form Carinthia looks his most dangerous opponent, although one of the newcomers may give trouble. There is a field of eleven in the Criterion Handicap. Bagby, who has ridden both Reremoana and Crown Area in their recent engagements, has chosen the ride on Reremoana, and L. G. Morris will be on Crown Area. This pair seems likely to monopolise the attention of backers, and at a difference of 191 b. Crown Area should prevail. Benzora might be a possibility with R. Reed up, but the dangerous runner both on form and at the weights looks to be Arrow Lad. When he beat Reremoana at Trentham he was in receipt of 201 b. Now he is in 111 b. better for that win. Racing, of course, does not resolve itself solely in a mathematical problem, but weight is a very material factor, and Arrow Lad seems very nicely handicapped. . , . , The big field of seventeen in the two-year-old handicap contains several untried youngsters. The distance being only half a mile, speed is essential, and this will probably beat the slower beginner, Admiral Drake. On form, Pass Book and Francolin will" be backed, and the horse Dutch Money has a reputation. Francolin finished last in the M elcome Stakes, but she showed a lot of speed to the straight, where she ran off the course. B. H. Morris has the mount to-morrow. She and Pass Book should run well. Form in the Derby points to Nightmarch and Full Feather. The former shapes like a stayer and so did Full Feather yesterday, while both are up to Derby weight. Silver Paper failed

badly in the Stewards, and while excuses can be made for him lie does not look a good Derby proposition. Concentrate may run well, but the form and appearance of Nightmarch and Full Feather are the most attractive. Roscrea will have to improve a lot to hold a chance, even if he starts. Historic and Mendip look sure of very solid backing in the Hagley Handicap, and with justification. B. H. and L. G. Morris are the riders of this pair. It does not look much good going beyond their form, but Amor and Imarosebud look to have chances. There is not much doubt that Mandane will start a hot order in the Metropolitan Handicap, and with Saturday’s race into her the prospects of a win are first class. On Cup form Hoylake and Oratrix will again be backed, while Battle Colours may spring a surprise. . Noteworthy is a fresh horse in the Randolph Handicap and looks like playing a prominent part. On first day s form Rabbi and Smithereens 100k 1 likely sorts First Sight’s win on Saturday will gain him numerous supporters for the concluding event, the Epsom Hnndicap. and form also points to Sir Roy and King Midas. __ DARGAVILLE MEETING PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP TO FLYING JULIET AWAMUTU WINS JUVENILE HANDICAP Dominion Special Service. Auckland, November 3. The Dargaville Racing Club’s meeting concluded at Avondale to-day. The weather was fine and there was a large attendance. The totalisator handled ±3u,229, making a total for the meeting of f 59,028, compared with ±23,409 10s„ when the club raced on its own course at Northern Wairoa. KARERE HANDICAP. The Red Lion-Town Teller bracket was a good first choice for the Karekare Handicap. Sulla and Josie Melville were showing out from Roman Pearl at the turn, but they tired, and Tea Money finished fast. He beat Red Lion by a head, with . Roman Pearl third and Monetize and Sulla next. Red Lion looked a little unlucky, and he is improving. Monetize also did better, and he should soon be right. OMANA HANDICAP. Vallar was another good favourite for the Omana Handicap, and he gave his backers little anxiety, leading from the end of the first furlong to beat Bnlolo easily, with Partial Eclipse and Abbey Queen next.

The placed horses were always in the leading division. Vallar is exceptionally Smart - KIRIKOPUNI HURDLES. Mangani pulled an army of admirers safely through in the Hurdles, but ho had little to spare from Harbour View, who will make good later on. Mangaiti appeared to get third but the judgj; placed his bracketed mate, Clockwork, in that position. JUVENILE HANDICAP. A hot favourite in Love Call went down in the Juvenile Handicap. From a bad start Awgmutu began like a flash and led Love Call all the way. Currajong and Carl Idem dead-heated for third a long way back, leading a strung-out field. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP. Royal Doulton gave backers a setback when she failed in the President’s Handicap. Flying Juliet led all the way and stalled off Hyde Park’s run by half a head, this pair being well clear of Thursby and King Emerald. The latter failed to stay. Papatu was running on and should race well at Whangarei. RUA WAI HANDICAP. Aussie headed a good pool on the Ruawai Handicap. Billikins and Lady s Boy made the pace a cracker, being six lengths clear of Aussie at the turn, but the pace told and Aussie won easily from Lady's Boy and Billikins, with The Lamb fourth. The Fox was well placed early, but rau very badly. HOANGA HANDICAP. Maori Boy and Tidal disputed favouritism in the Hoanga Handicap. War Officer, Bizarro, and Maori Boy were prominent at the turn, where Tidal was nearly last. Winsome Boy and Maori Boy were the leaders at the distance, when Tidal came with a magnificent run to snatch victory by a head from Maori Boy, with Nassock a head away and Winsome Boy and Elmstar next. The winner put in a phenomenal run from a bad position and looks like making a first-class horse as ■he improves in condition. FINLAYSON MEMORIAL. Golden Wedding and Stormy were heavily backed for the Finlayson Memorial. Golden Wedding badly interfered with Stormy nt the start of the nice, that horse being knocked back to last. In a great, finish Schorr and Golden M edding, who were handy all the way, deadheated a neck in front of Stormy, who came with a great rattle. He was very unlucky. Auriculus and Cynthia A. finished next. DETAILS’OF THE RACING (By Telegraph.—-Press Association.) Auckland. November 3. HORD HORE HANDICAP, of 125 sovs. Six furlongs. 7 J. D.
