EMPIRE FORESTRY VISIT

GOOD RESULTS WILL ACCRUE

Mr. A. Seed, secretary to the New ■Zealand Sawmillers’ Federation, who travelled with the Empire Forestry Conference delegates, stated yesterday that the results and influence of the conference were going to be of lasting benefit to forestry in New Zealand. It was his privilege to accompany the conference as the representative of the New Zealand timber industry, throughout its tour in New Zealand, and during its deliberations in' the early sessions. A great part of the work and results, however, were achieved in the conversations with delegates from various parts of the Empire while travelling. One pleasing feature was that all members of the conference were deeply impressed with the beauty of the Domion scenery and its wonderful prospects generally. In respect to timber they were naturally very impressed with the great kauri forests and with the qualities and beauties of rimu and other species. The phase of forestry matters which most affected Mr. Seed was that relating to the proper utilisation of the remaining resources-and it was, he said, clearly the general opinion of delegates that the steps now being taken by the sawmillers of New Zealand for closer organisation and greater efficiency were highly desirable, not only in the interests of the sawmillers themselves, but for the general welfare of the forests.

It was essential, said Mr. Seed, that the sawmillers, who were the harvesters of the forests, should be thoroughly well organised in order to be able to fully co-operate with the State Forest Service in the carrying out of an ordered and intelligent policy to secure th greatest possible utilisation of the Dominion’s remaining forests, and benefit from the plantations which were to provide the future requirements of New Zealand.
