THE GENTLEMAN’S PSALM
Sir, —In the magazine section of your issue of October 20 appears an extract from an English paper, containing seme fifteen definitions of "a gentleman.’’ To my mind, not one of these definitions covers the whole ground. May I call -the attention of your readers to the Prayer Book version of the 15th Psalm, which has been aptly termed, “The Gentleman’s Psalm”? Here we find what I think to be the finest description which has ever been given of what a “gentleman” should be. Only one verse might prove a slight stumbling-block to those of us who have commercial surroundings, namely, that which excludes those who have “given their money upon usury.” It would seem to exclude not only pawnbrokers, but all shareholders in joint stock companies. It gives one a slight shock at first.—l am, etc., SENEX.
