MYSTERIOUS SINKING
STEAMER IN MARSEILLES HARBOUR SUSPICION OF FOUL PLAY (Australian Press Association.) Paris, October 31. The Numidia, due to leave Marseilles for Corsica, and carrying cargo and 250 passengers, mysteriously sank in Marseilles Harbour. Her last cargo was aboard, but she was still without passengers, when in the small hours of the morning a stoker found the ship filling with water. He gave the alarm, and a salvage vessel did its utmost, but it was impossible to save the ship. No lives were lost. The only explanation is that one of the sea cocks was opened either accidentally or deliberately. In view of the recent maritime strike, there is a suspicion of foul play, and a full inquiry has been ordered. [The Numidia is a steamer of 1281 tons, built in 190-1 at Nantes.]
